Why visit a cemetery when you’re on vacation, you ask? The tombs at this Milan burial ground offer a great glimpse of Italian artistic styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

I discovered this by accident on a random meandering walk and was amazed at the artistic sculptures, the beautiful mausoleums and the stunning main building.

I have never seen such a beautiful cemetery. The statues, structures, decor were amazing. Some of the monuments were more elaborate than churches I've seen.

It is disappointing that this site does not rate more highly on things to do in Milan. It is an amazing site of graves, crypts and buildings. But far more interesting are the variety of sculptures that adorn the graves and the tall crypts. The...More

Not essential but nice to visit and quite a fancy and grand cemetery. Very large so you probably won't see most of it.

We're big fans of cemeteries, particularly grand 'Victorian' ones. Monumentale puts all those we've seen so far, including Pere Lachaise, into the shade. It's a lovely place to walk on a hot day, very calming and with plenty of trees to walk under for shelter....More

The monumental cemetery was one of the absolute highlights when visiting Milano. It is as if you are wandering around in an open air museum, regrouping fantastic art and impressive monuments, but always in a serene, almost emotional context. You keep silent out of respect......More

As others have said, I don't think a guide is needed. Just get off at the - Porta Garibaldi Metro Station and it's a short walk. There is a pedestrian only street to the right of the entrance of the Metro Station that is... More
