If you look at it from one corner the square is very beautiful with carved wall reliefs and what seems to be an old well. However if you walk to the opposite corner and turn around the sight you get is a building site covered with scaffolding and the rear entrance to one of the busiest McDonalds I've ever seen.... So close to the Duomo and the hordes of tourists, it is a huge relief to walk into the peace and serenity of Piazza Mercanti. I'm sure this beautiful old piazza is overlooked by many visitors as it's so easy to walk straight past its entrance. In fact, we only found it because we needed to use the Macdonald's toilets... Can you find a strange animal in a bas-relief up in one of the arches facing Via dei Mercanti? Search for it! Someone says it's the proof of the celtic origin of Milano. It looks like a board sitting on its hind legs. The Italian name of that animal is scrofa semilanuta, in English "half-woollen sow". Semi-lanuta comes from the... More

If you decide to walk from Castello to Duomo you will pass in front. A nice building relatively well preserved.

This medieval square is almost separated from the rest of the throbbing city centre, despite being in its very heart. Lined on four sides by imposing buildings it is nevertheless an island of peace. It could fit in any other minor Italian medieval town and yet it is Milanese through and through. A gem.

Piazza Mercanti is a picturesque square just a stone's thrown away from the Duomo. During the Middle Ages, this was the commercial and governmental center of Milan. Piazza Mercanti, Milan, Italy Piazza Mercanti it was a city hall and a prison. It is not as hectic anymore. Its square does seem to throw you back to the Middle Ages thanks... More

When walking from the Castle to the Duomo you will pass this building. Interesting history of the piazza with people having gone bankrupt having to sit whilst being mocked by the people. Interesting audio "trick" to try while under the building in the North-Eastern corner... Ask your guide.

There's not much to see and actually nothing you wouldn't have seen before when travelling Italy. Nevertheless it is nice to see, but I wouldn't eat there - too expensive.

It's not very big at all but very quaint and just a stone's throw away from the Duomo square. Well worth a quick look.

Staying in Centro Storico

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.
