The area
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

The view of the cathedral and the Galleria Emmanuelle is wonderful. However, there was a big concert taking place in the square. This limited the view and there were even more people in the square than usual.
It is very beautiful early in the morning because there are not many people. At lunchtime it is very crowded and it is difficult to walk.
You should avoid coffee, aperitifs and food here: everything costs significantly more than 500 m outside the square.
The concert could be heard from further away and so we were able to hear Gianna Nannini live!

Milan is a generally bustling large city - none of the bucolic slowness that one can find in the smaller towns like Padova, Bologna, Pisa and Firenze. The large piazza that fronts the majestic Duomo, museum, and the Galleria is a consistent flow of people no matter what the time of day. Large Taxi stand on the one side, a huge monument to Vittorio Emanuele II in the middle and a very large space to stroll, meet up with others or just stroll.

The square is characterized by the majestic Duomo that represents a symbol of Milan. The square is always crowded by both Milanese and tourists entering and leaving the Gallery. To visit the Royal Palace and the Museum of the twentieth century and, of course, the Gothic Cathedral. You can get there easily by subway.

A vast square with a lot of architectural beauty around. The Milan Cathedral and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele are highlights from this place. It is there that everything happens, always full, a continuous movement of people, commerce, expensive shops, bars, restaurants, ice cream shops.
There's no way to go to Milan without going by.
If you need souvenir store has there, if you need fast food also has, if you need a bathroom also has on the side of the Duomo ( paid, but there is ).
Better avoid going on Sundays, I found it too full.

The heart of Milan - the Piazza Duomo owes its current appearance to the architect Giuseppe Mengoni, whose project expanded the square to its current size in 1865-1873. Since that time, there have been only one fundamental changes - the monument to King Victor Emmanuel, installed at the end of the XIX century. By the way, it was Victor Emmanuel II who laid the first stone in 1865 for the construction of the gallery named after himself, which became the second landmark of the square. The gallery, which became an equally important place for Milan, was built by 1867. Unfortunately, during its construction, Mengoni died after falling from the scaffolding. Despite the importance of the gallery, the dominant feature of the square is the cathedral, which is the third largest in the world after Rome's San Pietro and Seville. The cathedral was built on the site of the early Christian Basilica of St.Thecla, where in 367 Bishop Ambrose of Milan baptized the father of the church, Augustine. Both they and the Virgin Mary and many other saints are depicted in thousands of sculptures of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nascente. This time I managed to visit the roof of the cathedral, which offers a magnificent panorama of the Piazza Duomo. If climbing roofs is not part of your plans, then you can sit in a cafe in the leader of the Italian retail La Rinascente on the left side of the cathedral.

So, my first review in 2025). The New Year's Eve party was traditionally held next to my beloved cathedral handsome. 2024 was a very difficult year for me psychologically, although I exceeded my travel plan. That's why Nezavisimaya Gazeta wanted to have a full break. We began as usual with a collective celebration. It was fun like never before. The people had a bunch of different dances and had the opportunity to join them). At the same time, everything was fine with order, the people were positive and friendly. And then we drove home to our villa, where we continued the Russian-style party with caviar and kokoshniks😂, which I brought as a gift.

We hadn't imagined the cathedral square to be so crowded. It's not just tourists who meet here. People from all nations, including Italians, are gathered here. The buildings and the square are very impressive. We'll come back tomorrow straight after breakfast. Maybe it won't be so crowded then.

I was there in November when they start the preparation for the Christmas tree and market. There was a large area blocked off and lots of construction noise. The square is large and beautiful bustling with people and tourists. It was lovely to look at from the terraces of the Duomo.

Having read that the rows of palm and banana trees, which decorated the square on the opposite side of the Cathedral, had been removed and replaced (change of sponsor), this morning we went to see the new planting.
Given that the plants are not ornaments and that, once planted, it would be best to leave them where they are, if palm trees were not perhaps the most suitable essences for our city. even the current planting left me perplexed.
It is inspired by the spontaneous one of the Oasi Zegna, in the Biella area, but here there is nothing spontaneous about it, in fact it seems almost abandoned, like a "ruderal green".
Perhaps, when the plants have grown (provided that in three/four years a new sponsor doesn't change everything again) the row will have less of a temporary appearance,

Piazza Duomo - Cathedral Square - a very beautiful central city square from the 19th century, where the main attraction, the Milan Cathedral, and the beautiful Victor Emmanuel Passage are located. Always busy. The vendors offered a little corn as food for the pigeons and the pigeons landed right on the people.

What time do they turn off the lights at the Duomo? I know it's beautifully lit up at night... 🤔 but anybody know what time they turned it off? Would I be able to see them at midnight? Anythings to do at Midnight in Milan?

This is truly an awesome area and there is a humongous historic building but I am not sure about safety. There are tons of tourists but I don’t see any police or security in this area.

It is safe area , but there are pick pockets around.
Please be careful, and keep credit cards separate from money.

I'm taking the train to Milan for a day visit. What's the best way to get to City Centre?
Written 17 January 2016
I suggest you grab a map from the station centrale and go there by walking.
Better ask the tourism office to highlight the best road to take,
By this way,you can have an idea about the city, and not only the touristic center.
On your way back you can take the metro.
Another way to discover the city with the ability to hop in hop off is to take the bus sight seeing tour that happens to stop in front of the stazione centrale

Hi everybody!
I need an advice : what is the best way of getting from Linate airport to The
Square Milano Duomo Hotel
I understand that I can take bus#73 to the San Babilo metro , but the bus has a lot of stops and might take up to 1 1/2 hr.
The other choice is to take AirBus, but it will take me to a Central Train station which is 3 km from the Hotel
Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
PS Do not want to spent $$$ for a Taxi or private transfer

Dear alinderman55,
Perhaps the best way to get to Piazza del Duomo (although I do not know the name of the hotel) you get to the central station with the airport transfer and then take the yellow metro M3 S Donato direction and get off after 4 stops to Duomo. The cost of the metro ticket is 1.50 Euros, half every 3 minutes while the transfer from Linate costs 10 EUR one way, 16 EUR round trip a bus every 20 minutes. See the website atm and malpensashuttle for any further information.
Although late, I hope it is useful and you has understood my English and I wish you a pleasant stay in Italy.
