Our guidebook spoke of "a quiet refuge of cobble stone streets". The reality was a mob scene reminiscent of Venice or Florence at their worst. The line for the funicular to ascend stretched a hundred meters or so and it was difficult to get around...More

Cita Alta, Bergamo's old town, is the most amazing place. I spotted it whilst travelling from Bergamo airport to the train station and cut short a visit to Milan to go and see it and I am so glad that I did. It is the...More

Citta Alta is very historical and beautiful place. It is great place to go and spend time in walking, exploring, enjoying architecture, food, caffe, gelato, tiramisu ...Beautiful small streets full of history. Riding up the funicular. I liked this place very much!

Such a little gem of a town. The old city is quite delightful with amazing views over the countryside from the castlebat the top. It is a satisfying walk, about 170 steps up to the castle. We did not use the funicular but it might...More

Expect long queues to ride the funiculars up to La Citta Alta, else be prepared for many cobblestones before reaching the top. Beautiful views below, but a city event was underway the day we chose to visit and incredible crowds, not fun!

I’m sorry I don’t know whether or not the shops are open on a Sunday. I would think many would be as the focus is very much on tourism. I’m sure you could find out by asking locally wherever you are staying. I hope you enjoy... More
