Cool ride to the upper city. It only takes a couple of minutes to reach the destination. We paid 3 Eur for an adult and one kid.

This method of transport was prompt and efficient. It took us to the beautiful old town of Bergamo which we loved. We had an excellent guide who explained the history of the town. It is full of character and atmosphere. There was a queue for the train but it was reduced quickly. This is a very good way to get up the hill.

Great method of going from the lower city to the higher city - cheap, fits approx 80 people - can be a tight fit so wouldn’t recommend if claustrophobic.
Easy to get tickets via the ticket booth or self service machine. Good location at both stations for the lower and higher cities.

The old town was very nice, i recommend it!
Try to stay away from central train station at night, to much crime.
Also not enough taxi in that city.
But all in all a nice place.

The Funicular Railway connects the historic core of Città Alta (the suspended fortified city of Bergamo built up on a hill) with the Città Bassa, the financial lower city. Built in 1887, it is one of the two funicular lines serving the city of Bergamo; the other being the Bergamo - San Vigilio funicular that runs from the Citta Alta even higher up for great views of the surrounding areas.

Visiting Bergamo is always a highlight if my visits to Milan. It is a short train ride from Milan, a quick walk to the funicular to Bergamo Alta and a quick ride up. Both the upper part and lower parts of Bergamo are fun to visit for eating, shopping, visiting the beautiful churches or just wandering the quaint streets.

It is officially part of the public transport system. It connects the Città Bassa (new part), with the Città Alta (historic center). Although the funicular got renovated sereal times, it is basically an still old system from 1887 and an interesting part of technological history, it is a tourist attraction itself. During the ride, you have an interesting view to the new town.

The Funicular Railway Upper City - Lower City was built in 1887 and it is one of the two funicular lines serving the city of Bergamo. We were so happy when we saw it that we do not need climbing to upper city when our apartament was situated after whole day of climbing. Another advantage bus from airport has stop just directly at lower entrance. You can buy combine ticket, bus + furnicular from and to airport.

Do we need to pre book to go on the funicular? What's the best way to get there from Bergamo airport?

No need to pre book. From Bergamo Train Station, you will get the bus no 1 and you ll get to Funicolare. The distance between he railway station and funicolare is about 800m.
