The Colleoni Chapel looks elegant against the background of the modest Romanesque exterior of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. As a matter of fact, it was erected on the site of the northwestern apse of this church destroyed by Bartolomeo Colleoni's soldiers. Anyone who has been to Venice has seen Verrocchio's masterpiece - the equestrian monument of this condottiero, i.e. the leader of the mercenaries in the Piazza Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Colleoni was considered the savior of Venice in the battle with the army of Florence and Milan at Molinella, but he preferred to build a chapel for himself and his prematurely deceased daughter in Bergamo. At that time it belonged to the Republic of Venice. He spent a huge sum of 50 thousand ducats in gold on the construction of the chapel at that time. It is forbidden to take photos inside. But in front of the entrance you will see the coat of arms of the Colleoni family. Yes, yes, you were not mistaken! There are three testicles on the coat of arms. It is believed that the family owes its symbol to one of its founders, Gisalberto Colleoni, with a characteristic physiological feature, the third testicle, which could be the result of orchitis. By the way, the surname itself can be written as Coglioni, that is, "testicles".

I was looking forward to viewing this chapel since it had been talked about in various groups for quite some time. I was very disappointed and literally spend less than 10 minutes here. If you want to enjoy beauty, go to the cathedral and be immersed.

I read of people saying pictures are banned here, which they are. I wouldn't have taken any anyway.

Popped in early in the morning- lovely and quiet. Absolutely fabulous inside and out. Every square inch is a proliferation of craftsmanship. Mediea’s effigy is particularly exceptional. No photo allowed - this is one for your personal memory bank and it’s free

It is beautiful both on the inside and on the outside and the entrance is free. Located in the same place as Santa Maria Maggiore.

This must-see attraction is in the Old Town, next to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It was built in 1487. According to my guidebook it’s the most beautiful building of the city. It was made of red and white marble, I think it’s really marvellous. We could go into and look around, but photography is prohibited.

Bartolomeo Colleoni was a military leader in the 15th century who was known to have three testicles. Colleoni was so unusually proud of his affliction, he insisted his family’s coat of arms displayed three testicles as its centrepiece. The coat of arms can be seen on the gate and fences around the chapel with his remains and, it is said, good luck falls upon anyone who… rubs the testicles.

It is absolutely stunning in the outside and you can go into some of it for free but some of it you need to pay. It is worth going to see the exterior but I didn't pay to go in

I was impressed with the architecture. From the outside it was beautiful. But the inside was a bit underwhelming. The lightning wasn't good and maybe I just expected more based on the exterior.

This lovely little chapel/church is at one end of the Piazza Vecchia and crowded among a number of other fantastic religious buildings. I would have loved to have taken some photos of the interior but that’s forbidden raising questions about the number of photos posted here…
