Extremely picturesque road from Locarno in Switzerland to Italian part of the lake. Leaving Switzerland, be ready for not-so-good Italian roads and not-so-rich small towns and villages on the way

First visit to this lake having been to Como and Garda in the past. Not disappointed, in fact loved all we saw.Stresa was a great overnight stop with beautiful walkways along the shore and quite elegant all round. We splashed out and stayed at the Grand Hotel Bristol ..there is a line of VERY elegant hotels along the front with great balconies overlooking the lake.
Cannobio was a pastel coloured gem of a village and my favourite overall.
After some fantastic views around the French and Swiss Alps I was ready for some time beside water and this lake fitted the bill perfectly.
Cost us about 70 euros given tolls , from Chamomix but well worth it to escape poor mountain weather .Balmy temperatures in mid Sept and not too busy.

We went to Stressa a very beautiful little town where we had the best Gellato ever and from there took the ferry to three islands. They were picture perfect with great food and amazing views.

We had a wonderful time

We stayed in Locarno and Pallanza and got the boat between. The lake is beautiful, surrounded by great scenery and interesting places. There is great scope for a full holiday and if you’re an older person you get discount on lots of stuff in Switzerland, free buses, so easy to have a sustainable time.
It’s a lovely place to explore.

Lake Maggiore o Verbano is a pre-Alpine lake of fluivo glacial origins, its shores are shared between Switzerland and Italy.
The name Maggiore means The mayor and derives from the fact that is the largest of the lakes in the area and second lake of Italy, because the largest one is Lake of Garda

A beautiful destination.

The scenery is stunning.

Travel on the lake when you can, the ferries visit all the towns/resorts.

A very relaxing place with nice towns and broad lakeside promenades. Towns of Stress and Aroma on the Italian side of the lake are nice tourist type towns which are relaxed and pleasant places to stay or visit. There are plenty of nice gardens around the lake and on the islands of the lake. The Maggiore Express is a nice trip into Switzerland and takes a full day with the boat back from Locarno. All in all a nice place to visit with as much or as little to da as you want.

We stayed in Lake Maggiore in late July and were surprised it was not very crowded, very peaceful. Nice slow pace.

We stayed in a villa for 3 nights, 2 full days on the shores of Lake Maggiore. This was a fantastic location.

On our first day we headed to the Cable Car at Stressa to the top of Mount Mottarone. It was a great way to see the lakes and regions. We then took a boat to Isola pescatoria & Bella. These were great islands and good to have a look around both have cafes and restaurants, souvenirs etc.

Our second day was a visit to see the beautiful gardens and zoo, Parco Pallavincino, well worth a visit. Spent about 2 hours there. We then took an afternoon drive up coast towards Swiss border, having lunch in a seaside town along the way.

Of an evening we were spoilt for choice, the lakeside restaurants serve up beautiful local cuisine with seafood a speciality. Bellisimo!

The Lake Maggiore is definitely a must-see if you happen to be in the north of Italy. You can visit from Milan. A nice way to discover a bit of this lake is to start from Stresa and book a ferry day ticket to visit the three Borromeans islands. Plan a day. Enjoy!
