The Promontory of Portofino, the most northern protected coastal area of the western Mediterranean, shows scenery and landscapes amongst the most famous in the world. Formed by giant conglomerate deposits overlying limestone banks, mainly of marl, it has geomorphologic and microclimatic characteristics which provide, in a limited territory, an extremely varied environment. Within short distances, we can find the cool forests of the northern mountainside and nearby the sunny cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean world, from the civilization of chestnut to the olive one, from the peasant traditions to the sea and the fishing traditional industry. The Park of Portofino has been a protected area since 1935 and it hosts one of the largest concentrations of flora of the Mediterranean, a large variety of birds and invertebrates as well as important historical and architectural treasures such as the abbeys of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte and San Gerolamo della Cervara. A network of over 80 km of trails allows walking and hiking excursions of various lengths and difficulty, with the opportunity to enjoy the peculiarities of the whole area in the best way possible.

This is not good for handicaps.....there is a mini bus which tours the park but is the kind of place you need to explore. It is on the top of the hill dominating the villages and very beautiful with the vineyards and fruit trees.

We did several walks in the area and they are well indicated with suggestions where to have a rest and where to see something particular. Really recommanded to walk to Portofino in-stead of driving.

We walked the footpath to Portofino from Santa Margherita. You have to follow the coast road until you can access the park. It's actually a heavily wooded area with paths running through it. Very well maintained and marked. It is up and down hills and uneven steps but if you like hiking you'll love it Lots of trees, and even... More

Portofino is quite a small city with a lovely marina. Very nice to walk along the water and have lunch or dinner. Good for a day trip. Not sure if I would stay there as not a lot to do. Good if you want to relax. Markets set up by the water and you can get the ferry out to... More

Took a train to SML and from there took a bus to Portofino. You can also walk as it is a lovely walk by the coast. It was drizzling that day so I decided to hop into a bus. SML is more like a marina bay with boats and yachts parked at the bay which is a lovely sight while... More

We went for a day visit to Portofino by boat - the ideal way to arrive so that you can see it from the best angle. It is much smaller than we expected but a lovely place to take a stroll to the church and lighthouse and then have a lazy lunch.

Some of the most beautiful hiking on the Italian cost particularly Portofino to Camogli stopping for lunch in San Fruttuosso. You can take a cool off moment swim in the bay and sample wonderful local fish at Giovanni restaurant. Thoroughly recommended. The GM at Hotel Splendido Ermes recommended it to us over 15 years ago and we return every year... More

Walked along seafront from SML to Pariggi. Scenic but noisy from traffic. Pavements apart from 2 small parts where you had to walk in road !. Entry to Park well signposted. Would suit most walkers (though more experienced hikers may find it tame !) Beautiful scenery with glimpses into spectacular villas. Takes 45 mins to arrive in Portofino. We visited... More
