The views and the park itself are beautiful but the hiking trails are badly maintained (we were eondering if anyone actually did any maintenace dyring past years...). Some paths are really difficult to pass due to wild, overgrown plants with horns. There are no toilets or rubbish cans available so there are also quite some unpleasant surprices along the trails. Trails are usually well marked although some signs are contradicting eachother (time required) and some are probably hidden/worn out. Be sure to take good navigation with you.
We hiked on Palmaria, between Le Grazie and Portovenero, around Muzzerone and around Campiglia - all the same bad/poor maintence and no facilities such as restrooms, bins and/or rest/picknick areas. Shame!

If your Cruise port is la Spezia, and you have already seen the Cinque Terre, then take the time to go to Portovenere. You can easily do it on your own, just walk off the boat, go to the Ferry terminal, buy your ticket. Check the time schedule. I suggest to buy a one way and then take the bus back, you will be less restricted by the ferry schedule. Buy your ticket on the bus. If you are into outdoor activities, lots of lite hiking on Palmaria island just across Portovenere. Walk the small street, go to the Castle, just behind it there is an amazing small cemetery worth to look at. Visit San Pietro, San Lorenzo and have lunch in town. Go to Bajeico and get yourself a jar of this amazing pesto as a souvenir.

In addition to the villages of Cinque Terra our B&B host suggested a boat trip from the La Spezia harbor to Porto Venere. Arrival is at the Porto Venere harbor with many restaurants, shops, etc. The hardy explorer will hike up the many stone steps to an ancient church and then to the huge castle and its terrific views. A different path down takes you through narrow alleyways to the harbor. This is a low-key day trip and worth taking if you have the time. We enjoyed both the boat ride (a bus is an option) from La Spezia and the views from atop the castle.

Arriving at our La Specia hotel [Ghironi---see other review for a great hotel] at 1 pm, it was too late to do a day hike to the Cinque Terre. The hotel staff suggested this small village, only about 12 miles away. Porto Venere has never been in the plans and this is one of those fortuitous bits of info that was well worth it!! We will return to enjoy, again, the beautiful walk along the water [forced on you, because parking is hard to find and generally far away],with fun restaurants and the historic UNESCO Heritage site at the end of a spit of land. The church at the top has beautiful interior marble columns with stripes of alternating gray and white [reminds me of the mosque in Cordoba, Spain], and the ramparts have several look outs onto the water from holes in the stone walls. This is well worth spending 4 hours visiting this town, and more if you want a good meal.

I hope this is the right spot ? But the town of Porto Venere is pretty special in its own right and it has everything in a compact area. You have Castle Doria, St.Peters Church, Grotto Byron, an Ancient Town Gate & Walls dating from 1133 AD, Church of San Lorenzo, Shops, Bars & Restaurants. It is a magic spot and equals in my opinion the villages of Cinque Terre and I only wish we had more time to explore & admire !

Portovenere is perfect for relax. Carry good shoes for walking the small city with its many stone stairs. Do miss the possibility of enjoying lunch or dinner at Locanda Lorena (Restaurant at the Palmaria Island, at 5 few minutes from Portovenere). The Restaurant provides transportation during operation hours.

Catch the ferry from La Spezia to Porto Venerra return for 8 euro. Just check the timetable & you get the right ferry back to La Spezia as there are lots of ferris coming & going. A magic little place to walk around & visit the church at the point & view the coast up towards Cinque Terre. Lots of little restaurants to choose from. We spent 3 hours there to look around & have lunch. If it is good weather take your bathers the water was crystal clear. Have to swim off the rocks though. Recommend visiting. A slower pace to the Cinque Terre villages.

We stayed at a lovely B&B in La Spezia and the owner Alfio said to us we should stop in Porto Venere. He was spot on. The town is lovely with lots of little shops and corners as well as the Park at the headlands. Byron cave was great and the castle and church are a real reminder of times past! Great views, an interesting walk and exciting architecture and history. Stop by and meander through the town afterwards, its worth it!

Porto Venere sits outside the five towns of Le Cinque Terre but has the same level of charm and history as the others. Popular on the weekend for the sun seekers and the need to be seen crowd, the Chiesa at the top of the hill and Byron's Grotto worth a look for the views alone. We spent the day scuba diving at spent time on the parco nacionale around Tino and Tinito islands. Very beautiful. Clearly one can rent a small boat from Porto Venere and join the locals sunbathing between the islands. After 5pm Aperitivo on the boardwalk a must!

Visited all the town's by boat from here ! Bought the tickets that morning and got the first boat out! What a trip the highlight of our holiday! Done the furthest town first Monterosso I think that's right but anyway absolutely fantastic one of the nicest places we have ever seen! The rest are also beautiful but very busy ! Porto Venere is closest to la Spezia and is a must visit also !

Grazie

We used a boat company called HopHop boat which we caught from the left of the marina in La Spezia. Google their name and you will get the exact address. Our day cruise was €100 but it was magnificent.

Ciao. Vorrei chiedere cortesemente..c'e' l'entrata da pagare?
Written 11 August 2017
No, non si paga... le uniche cose da pagare, sono eventualmente il parcheggio e, se si vuol vedere, il biglietto per visitare il castello, ma comunque è inferiore ai 10€.

Hi, How did you get to Porto Venere from La Spezia?? Thanks
Written 11 August 2015
Bus is convenient, buy tickets from stalls near his-stop. Ask the local people. Regular buses go there.

Gracias

Does anyone know if there is a train from La Spezia to Porto Venere? Thanks in advance.
Written 29 March 2015
No there is no train however you can get the boat from the front of La Spezia. It's a beautiful journey, takes about 15 minutes and the sail into Porto Venere is to die for!!! Photo opportunity not to miss. You can get the bus but roads are nor great and you miss out on the views! Have a great trip!
