The church of San Matteo is well worth a visit. You'll find it in a sweet (and quiet) medieval square not far from the bustle of via S Lorenzo and Piazza de Ferrari. This was a Doria family chapel, and Andrea Doria's sword is on display. We did not get into the crypt where his tomb is (next time!). Be sure to go out the side door into the cloister, which still forms part of some locals' daily residential and working life.

Fiefdom of the powerful Doria family who lived here in some buildings overlooking the small square. Place full of atmosphere. Don't miss a visit to the church of San Matteo, of medieval origin, which preserves the remains of Andrea Doria. Small in size but rich in frescoes and marbles. From inside you can access a very intimate cloister.

The medieval piazza with palaces of Doria family members. The charch contents the sword of Andrea Doria and his tomb in cripta. For visiting it you have to ask a key. The tomb of Lamba Doria locates on the facade in the left side.

I went to Piazza San Matteo based on the recommendation of a guide book. There is a nice little church there, with some ornate frescos, and a couple of old houses.
This is close to other attractions in Genoa, so if you have time it's worth a look (mostly the church). However, I personally thought it wasn't the most interesting place in Genoa, so if you are in a hurry, you can skip it in favour of other sites.

Even though this piazza is small, it still looks beautiful with the beautiful buildings surrounded. I think its nice to hop from one piazza to another, and this piazza should be on your list :)

This square is in the middle of several historical buildings, including a church, most of them belonging to the Doria family. It is a masterpiece of family's architecture

This small church looks nothing from the outside, sitting on a small, non-descript plaza, but once you get inside, your jaw will drop as it's quite stunning inside. Well worth seeing and completely free to visit, although it is closed during the middle of the day.

Church San Matteo was completed in 1125, as evidenced by the medieval black and white marble horizontal striped façade from that time period. The square is made up of several striped façade buildings like the Palazzo di Andrea Doria and Palazzo di Lamba Doria. If you are lucky enough to find the church open for a visit, you will be amazed at the difference from the plain exterior to the ornate interior. The square itself is quiet and not busy with tourists at all, even though it it near the bustling Piazza di Ferrari.

This is one of the more cosy parts of the old town of Genoa (Genova, Genua... - the name is different wherever you look). But the old town is still quite dirty, rough and sometimes scary. If you stray from the tourist path, you'll quickly notice that there's a lot of drug dealing and other stuff going on. I felt quite uneasy even though it was in the middle of the day.

I went inside, there was a service going on. Beautifully decorated, take your time here. Building apparently stems from the byzantine period.
