About
The Acquario di Genova was built on the occasion of the Expo ’92, a celebration of the fifth centenary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus, with the intention of restructuring and enhancing an area full of history and traditions, located in the heart of Genoa’s historic centre, the Porto Antico (the old port). - HenriCloeteTrondheim, Norway225 contributionsImpressive varietyI'm always a bit hesitant about aquariums and zoos, but the tanks at the Aquarium of Genoa are generally impressively large (although I felt some were too overcrowded) and well-maintained. They also have an impressive selection of animals, and it is therefore great for educational purposes. However, I felt several of the information boards at tanks were very outdated (the species in the tanks were different than those shown) and we actually spotted a couple of outright mistakes where the name of the fish did not correspond to the picture.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2024
- Deshan AmaranayakeColombo, Sri Lanka62 contributionsExploring the Wonders of GenoaThe aquarium was the primary reason my wife, her mom, and I visited Genoa. It was our first time in the city, and this incredible attraction topped our list for our trip to northern Italy. The aquarium is home to thousands of creatures, ranging from tiny jellyfish to massive sharks, gentle manatees, and playful dolphins. We were captivated by the diverse array of marine life, including starfish and penguins. The experience was not only entertaining but also highly interesting and educational. We cherished every moment. After exploring the aquarium, be sure to take a boat trip through the Genoa port- it's a fantastic way to round off your adventure.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2024
- Bear ILeeds, United Kingdom15 contributionsShould not keep dolphins...Not bad however I have enjoyed aquarium in Seville Spain alot more than this one. It was hard to watch dolphins in such a small empty pool with nothig to play with. I have cried .... also aquarium is overpriced! 31 euros its a joke in my opinion.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 June 2024
- OtterPuff6 contributionsTourist trap aquarium with sub-standard husbandryThe Aquarium is located at the port of Genoa so easy to get to via public transportation. I visited on a Friday around 11am so there were no crowds. The first thing that struck me about the aquarium is how commercial it seemed with the photo booths and lots of up-selling techniques. I appreciated the information given next to each animal display but was seriously dismayed to see the habitats a lot of the animals were living in were sub-standard. The dolphins were in a tiny tank without any toys or interaction save for one small float, the sea horses were in a plain tank that was severely overcrowded, and the manatees did not have appropriate conditions for grazing and were forced to eat lettuce heads floating on the surface of the water. Halfway through the one-way tour of the aquarium were the eateries and gift shop (again, very commercialized). The touch pools were interesting for the kids but I did not see any hand washing stations after that section of the aquarium. Overall, while I enjoyed myself, the aquarium needs to bring up it's husbandry standards and rein in it's commercialism.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 June 2024
- GumdropGirlLos Angeles, California252 contributionsNice Aquarium, Good LocationI'm spoiled for aquaria because I've been to the one in Monterey Bay so many times. But the Aquarium of Genoa is nice little place with cute exhibits that aren't exclusively focused on local wildlife. They have manatees (native to North America). They have pretty jellyfish. And they've got plenty of very cool seahorses. This was a fine activity pick for my family (toddler in tow). Good stroller accessibility. Centrally located on the wharf.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 August 2024
- RicherTripsMonterrey, Mexico4,593 contributionsWe had greater expectationsConsidering it´s the largest aquarium in Europe, we expected more. When we bought the tickets (no line) we were warned there were only 4 hours left, so we started in a hurry and finished it in 2 hours. The best part is watching the manatees and touching some rays, but sharks and dolphins looked trapped in their tanks. The different shops with plush toys, books and t-shirts, the photo spot, the cafeteria made me feel in an American aquarium, but those are larger. The Biosphere asks for a different ticket, and 15 minutes are enough to see the plants and birds, if you can stand the humid heat. At least, the Aquarium has good AC.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 August 2024
- KirilVuSofia, Bulgaria25 contributionsA descent aquarium if you haven’t been to a a lot of aquariums on your travelsAquarium is not very big, but is very crowded. We did not enjoy it very much, but if you are a fan of marine life and haven’t been to bigger aquariums (e.g. like in Barcelona) you might enjoy it. I think you can safely skip if you are in Genova for a couple of days.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024
- Irish TouristIreland29 contributionsFun day out!Visited the aquarium in July as an adult couple and we throughly enjoyed it. The aquarium offer a picture on arrival which you can purchase at the end as a lovely keep sake. They offer the picture on a key chain and fridge magnet. The picture is taken in front of a green screen so they can add effects to it. The aquarium was filled with many different sea life. They had information on all the animals available. The aquarium was so clean we even seen a worker inside a tank cleaning with a toothbrush. Nice to see staff taking initiative and cleaning where the animals live. There was an exhibit where you can actually touch a sting ray which was cool. The dolphins have a big inclosure and a ball to play with. If you are looking for something to do in Genoa I would recommend spending a few hours here. I would recommend buying tickets online before you get here as there can be a queue for tickets. I think it was €25 for an adult ticket. Worth it.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 August 2024

My wife and me have been desappointed after our visit.
There are way too many fishes in each aquarium => you can see a great number of dolphins (a dozen) in an aquarium too small for them which contributes to a lack of vivacity because they look sad.
Moreover, most people and especially children spend their time shouting and hitting the windows.
Then, during the visit, you can also watch reptiles and amphibians. This species need very specifical settings inside their terrariums => The chameleon was searching for heat and UV but there is no. UV light for him and the heat lamp was too high. Moreover, this animal needs a drip system to drink but once again there is none. To finish, such a terrarium should be made of fence instead of glass because a chameleon needs ventilation. Why is humidity/temperature level not checked ? This checking requires a particular device inside the terrarium that was obviously not provided.
I found this aquarium overcrowded, it looks like an amusement park with noise and children running and shouting all the time.
Positive point : variety of species.
To conclude : we don’t recommend this aquarium. It wasn’t the first time we visit an aquarium but this one has particularly saddened us.

We came today to Genova extra to visit the aquarium. We had our cat with us since we travel with it in our van :) Nobody told us anything, even though the staff saw the cat in the cat bag. 30 minutes in, a staff member told us no cat allowed, but if we close the cat bag, it’s ok, what we immediately did. Five minutes later, another member of the staff came.... and kicked us out of the aquarium ! We didn’t know that animals weren’t allowed inside. Of course, we can understand that, even though we never encountered such a problem anywhere else. But our cat was safe in the bag and didn’t disturb anybody. The worst part in all that was that the staff was very rude and unfriendly during the whole time, they also barely spoke English correctly. And if you count that some fishes have quite small aquariums, that it can be very crowded, especially on the weekend, I wouldn’t recommend to visit, much more I would advise to avoid it, especially for 27€

First the positive: Beautiful pier, beautiful historic city of Genova in the background, central location, and some nice exhibits like the seahorses, jellyfish, and Penguins. Staff in gift shop were also very kind.
The negative: Extremely expensive at €29 per person for this quality aquarium, that is so outdated with poorly cleaned, with distressed animals, foggy, scratched algae covered glass, very very poor lighting in both the tanks and exhibits, extremely poor signage and help directing you to the exhibits and lots of steps to climb with no real sense of order or grouping. After the penguin exhibit, which we did enjoy, we came to a barren white building with huge windows to the pier with no signs other than for restrooms or coatrooms (€3). Then we came to a sign selling tickets for a behind the scenes tour, but did not want to pay another €8. We had no idea the rest of the aquarium was after that section, so we completely missed the touch tank, turtles and rainforest, and dolphins. They should really give out a map or at least display a big MAP of the facility in the beginning so you know what to expect and what order to view everything. They could also put up a big sign with an arrow after the penguin exhibit that says “Continue this way for Dolphins, Rainforest, and Touch Tank”. I don’t know how others knew this, but it was not at all clear you could continue without buying another ticket. We felt completely let down. But after watching a YouTube video of the Dolphin tank that we missed, we realize we were better off missing it. The 4 dolphins are like prisoners in a completely barren, relatively small concrete tank. How can such amazing, intelligent creatures be kept in such a way with little stimulation and such a boring enclosure?! This dolphin facility should be re-created as a Dolphin rescue and rehabilitation center. Then they can release dolphins into the wild and serve a wonderful purpose. I would feel better knowing my money was helping injured animals recover, rather than imprisoning them. These are large, incredibly intelligent mammals and that are self aware and deserve more respect and consideration. And the price for the photo they take of you is ridiculous. €5 for a small photo would be a fair price, not €20.
Finally, we were physically harassed by migrant street peddlers while waiting to buy our tickets, immediately after exiting the gift shop, and three more times while walking along the pier. It was really ridiculous and many would touch us and try to grab our hands to put bracelets on us or force trinkets inside them. We did mot feel safe and were concerned about pickpockets. There was no aquarium security or other security officers anywhere to be seen. You are on your own.
Overall, I would skip this aquarium and instead consider visiting the Valencia Aquarium in Spain or the SeaLife Aquarium in London. Both are FAR better than this outdated, poorly maintained aquarium.

Impressiveif not small exhibits for a huge variety of interesting species. Sad that they have severely bored dolphins in a small tank with no enrichment. Very popular place especially for families. Cafe on ground floor underneath entrance served fabulous warmed sandwichs. The aquarium building needs more seating inside as people were waiting/resting on cafe benchs and chair not consuming cafe food or drink. Disappointed at the end when we couldn’t collect our souvenir photo for 20 euros because they had already closed 10 minutes before the aquarium closed at 8pm. Worth the 29 euros each for 2 and a half hours.

The Aquarium of Genoa is one of the city's major points of interest and represents one of the best-known aquariums at a supranational level. I highly recommend getting tickets in advance and going to the entrance in the same way, because on some days the wait can become exhausting. The fauna and flora inside the structure are very beautiful and are worth the visit which has a fairly demanding ticket price.

Very Nice, its big! but wearing a mask the entire time inside was very uncomfortable. Not the Museums fault of course but what the Museum could do is RAISE the air conditioner. It was very hot inside.
The museum is big but it's not that I have to come back in the future. Ok experience.

I have little kids and we travel plenty, so we have seen aquariums in very different locations. The one in Genoa is nice and very large, the exhibits are well maintained and the information on each one is in different languages. It is kind of cool to see the different "environments" that they created for the different themes. The one ironic issue though... is that even though there are plenty of messages about plastic being a pollutant in oceans and affecting negatively marine species, the gift shop is full of plastic elements. In my opinion, this type of venues should be the example.

Even though they are basically prisons for animals, I love well kept aquariums, and the one in Genoa is one of the best I have so far been lucky to visit.
If you dont like standing in queues and dont want to have huge amounts of people (including many children) with you in the aquarium, avoid the weekends at all costs. I guess everybody is different, but for me, standing in line for more than an hour, to enter a place with a lot of people, many of them screaming, crying etc., is not at all what I am looking for. You want to reserve your entering time online. Choose a time early in the morning, and not on the weekend, so that you will able to enjoy the really wonderful aquarium the way it should be enjoyed.

I have to remove a couple of stars from the beautiful experience lived today because the inner path in some places is really difficult to understand and without the paper map it is easy to get lost in the meanders. In fact only after going out we realized we skipped the tubs altogether 15/16/17/18/19 because the entrance is located in a very congested point between stairs, elevator, fast-food and Shop, with many people walking in all directions and makes you easily lose your bearings. The map arrived in pdf via email a few hours before departure is difficult to consult, unless you go all the way with your phone in hand. Another clever menu at the Tender bar bought online promises savings that are not true. On the site the adult menu is charged 11 euros instead of (they say) 14.50, but in reality at the bar it costs 12.00 and not 14.50. Same thing for the children's menu (10.50 instead of 11.50). It is not the few euros that make the difference but the information must be given correctly. Also pay attention to the Bugo ticket because from 12 to 17 it is closed so you could pay and then depending on your schedule you can not get on it.

Visited Thursday 30 November.
Duration: 2 and a half hours.
Family 2 adults and 2 children aged 8 and 4 years.
Tickets purchased online for the complete aquarium, children's city, bigo and biosphere package.
By purchasing the package and choosing the fixed date there is a significant saving and you skip the queue at the checkout.
ATTENTION while waiting to enter there are some figures who will "give" you some figurines
and then put on bracelets and then demand 40 euros for the "service".
Once inside we had a very pleasant experience, both us adults and children.
Hundreds of different species of fish in huge, coral-rich and perfectly managed tanks.
Note of merit for the penguin and jellyfish tank.
If you have small children, perhaps a stroller is advisable as there are no rest areas to rest except in front of the dolphin tank.
Do not bring food with you as it is forbidden to consume food inside the aquarium except in their restaurants and bars.
Rating 9
The only flaw is the imperfect maintenance of the dolphin tank but I don't think it's in their interest if a bit of plaster is missing here and there.

Buongiorno, è presente un'area pic nic per il pranzo al sacco? Se sì, è all'interno dell'acquario?

Salve Alessandra.
