We kind of found this place accidentally. There are two "lifts" which go here, but it is much more fun strolling through the narrow lanes/steps of Genoa "Old Town" to get up here. Around the back was a great cafe as well...Cheap, good, honest food and friendly staff

This is a nice observation deck that can be reached by either of two lifts. We went up in one and down in the other. Good views of the city from the top. Don't miss the nearby funicular when you are in the area. At present the lifts and the funicular are free!

You get great views over the city from this viewpoint. For me, the highlight was the elevator, and the elevator station - old, authentic and in perfect condition. The elevator used to cost 0.90 cents per way, now it is free.

It is a viewing platform, easy to get to when following maps, some stairs but it was not that bad. Just have a bottle of water with you when you get to the top and you will be fine. You have a good view of the city which in my opinion isnt that beautiful but when you are in Genova I think it is a must to go to Spianeta especially because it is free.

How tantalizingly close the Spianata Castelletto looked on the map, just 100 meters from the Palazzo Bianco...which turned out to be 5 times longer a tortous walk up a steep gradient. Which is what we love about Genoa after all, the way the city has miraculously managed to grow on a steep hillside over the centuries. So just take your time if you do walk up via the Salita alla Spianata Castelletto and you will be rewarded by a great view looking down onto the port and the old city. The salita has a flat surface in the middle but has steps built onto each side of the street for walking convenience. Also, once you are done with the views at teh Spianata Castelletto the immediate neighborhood is a pleasant walk and as it is residential so has a very lived-in feel with several open shops during working hours.

Don’t make my mistake & put ‘Spianata Castelletto’ in Google maps to lead you to this lift - after several steep steps upwards it dawned on me I was heading for the top & not the base! So instead I used this elevator to come down. Not the ideal way round in baking heat. Whatever way you do it, the views up top are well worth the effort. It costs 90 cents for a one way ride, though no one checked. There’s a machine on site or tickets can be bought from supermarkets & tobacconists.

You can walk up to this viewpoint up a series of steps as its not too far, or for 90 cents each way, ride the old lift. We took the lift up, for the experience and then walked the 2/3 minutes down. Well worth a short visit because there are great views over pretty much the whole city and as its not too high you can see quite a bit of detail. Nice cafe there too.

If you're visiting Genova you can't miss this! The only place close to the ancient center where you can have a really good panorama over Genova. And it's FREE! ;-)
