Genoa is very tourist-friendly. Between 10:00 - 4:00 PM, the Metro (and Elevator) are free. The historic areas are quite close together, and easily visited.

Start from the metro station at Piazza Raffaele De Ferrari - an amazing square. You should research the square in advance, so you will know the significance of the buildings and orient yourself.

Walk a couple of blocks to see Christoper Columbus' house. It is adjacent to a large motorcycle parking lot, in an alley, and has little signage.

There is a large and beautiful cathedral not too far away - worth a stop - and a number of museums, which we skipped because of both time and interest.

Then walk through the picturesque, narrow streets - several blocks - to the UNESCO heritage site of a street of spectacular palaces - "Le Strade Nuove e il systema dei Palazzi dei Rolli".

One block further uphill is a (free) elevator to a look-out point to view the entire city.

Now that you have seen the key sights, walk down to a major street and take a public bus to a less touristic part of the city to enjoy a meal at a local restaurant. You may not find on-line reviews, but will see restaurants filled with locals - an indicator that the food and prices are good.

Beautiful fountain, clean square and great views all around. With the opera on the side of the square and lots of shops and restaurants around, this is a great spot to visit (especially on hot days)

Great Piazza to see, love these type of squares in European cities.

Although would say this piazza is spectacular and an absolute must, I would recommend visiting at night time when water fountain is lit up with nice colours.

Also atmosphere is much more pleasant at night time with people more relaxed and looking for somewhere to eat and take a nice stroll around city.

The main square in the city is highlighted by a magnificent fountain. Around the square there are cafes, Opera House and shopping.

This fountain is located in a large pedestrian area just off a busy road. Really nice for photos and close to lots of shops. There is even an insta "GENOA" to take your photos beside.
Nearby are a couple of churches. Nice area to take a break in a busy day

A spectacular water fountain. Lovely for sitting next too and bathing hot feet after a days walking around the city. The fountain is particularly beautiful at night. It’s lit up with coloured lights and is busy with street entertainers, and plenty of people to watch. One if the best fountains to be seen in Europe.
