Wonderful location for this church, which is curiously accessed by climbing a few steps directly from a door overlooking the sea.
The church is spartan and simple, perhaps a little disfigured by too many tourists who sometimes have an attitude against the place.
Overall absolutely recommended.

Although not a grand church, i usually pop in to most churches as there is always such a feeling of calm and solitude to be found. This one dates back to the 1300's. It has an austere interior of grey and black stone. There's not much in the way of elaborate adornments but it exudes charm.

This simple church sits right next to the water and has a view that most churches do not have. The bells ring on the hour in one tone ,and on the 1/2 hour with another tone so you know the exact time. It does not match the churches in Rome , but it is beautiful in its own way.

Located by the small beach at the end of Vernazza on Piazza Marconi, this unique 1318 Church is not as elaborate as its other churches in Italy. Santa Margherita, nevertheless, is still charming in its Italian style.

Expanded in the 16th and 17th century, there is the distinctive octagon bell tower. Beautiful views can be had from the Doria Castle or even Ristorante Belforte—both places we highly recommend. There is a large octopus mosaic in front of the church as well as a distinctive motif inside.

The painting with Mary and Child is quite impressive. The nave and the two aisles are part of its charming character. The light inside is definitely subdued, but lends itself to a peaceful respite from busy Vernazza.

Hit by torrential rains in October 25th, 2011, Vernazza was closed due to all the mud. It took over 100 million euros to bring it back. This is a picturesque town that you will never forget. It is part of the World Heritage site and is connected by the Cinque Terre trail and by the train.

We enjoyed visiting this old church. Legend has it that Santa Margherita di Antiochia was built because a wooden box containing the bones of St Margaret was found on the beach. The villagers built a church to house the relics but after a storm the church was destroyed and the relics were lost. The wooden box then reappeared in the same spot where it was first found so a new church was built where you find the church today. Santa Margherita di Antiochia was built in the 13th century in the Romanasque Geneose style. Dedicated to the patron of the town, it remains intact: in the inside you see three well preserved wide naves and an altar. The bell tower is rather unusual as it has an octagonal shape. You will find the entrance in the apse (where you will also find a wonderful 15th-century Gothic tabernacle).
The church is easily found on the harbor.

If you wonder what churches looked like before all the ornamentation took over, stop here for this 1318 era church...dark medieval and yet think of how many people worshipped here over the centuries.

You cannot go to Vernazza without seeing this wonderful church in the skyline. Definitely a must stop to see the beautiful decorations in the inside. A wonderful time capsule of how the way things were.

This was one of my favorite things to see in the midst of Vernazza. I did not know what Church it was when I first stumbled upon it. Great gem! Very gothic feel to it. So much incredible detail and architecture.

The church is in a lovely setting - right on the waterfront. There was a wedding at the church while we were there and I just thought - lucky bride to be married somewhere so wonderful
