The square pays the price of being the "younger sister", albeit bigger, of Liberty.
The thing I didn't like was seeing almost the entire perimeter used for commercial activities. Worse than the parking lots in Piazza Libertà. Economy wins over art.

This anteroom of the historic center is a square with a lot of life and charm, which mixes different styles and with a Baroque church of interest. There are cafés with terraces and shops where you can stop. Another essential square in the city center.

Feels very authentic and relaxed, lots of nice bars and beautiful streets nearby. We came in the winter and they had little Christmas market stalls but nothing big.

Udine is a marvelous historic Italian town with lots of atmosphere. But even in this surroundings, Piazza San Giacomo stands out as the main "living room" of Udine, even better than the main town square, Piazza della Libertà. Piazza San Giacomo is lined with shops, bars and restaurants, most of them under porticos; on one side the splendid San Giacomo Church is situated. On the central square is a nice fountain; this area is the playground for families with children. Choose an outdoor table at a bar, order a drink and let the time pass by. Be an Italian.

I love going to Friuli because many tourists haven't discovered it yet. It has that untouched feel but is still welcoming.
When you arrive in Udine you will find that the piazza isn't as large as some town squares but it is still sizeable. It is bordered on each side by historical buildings and a church. There are a couple of steps on one side but the other side leads into laneways and stores. The shops are rather expensive, carrying Italy's best known labels including Gucci, Armani and Prada. If nothing else the good citizens of Udine are well dressed. I found there was a very high number of shoe shops and I also found them hard to resist!
You can have a cup of coffee under the portico on one side of the square or find a coffee shop in one of the laneways. These don't necessarily have tables and chairs outside so you might have to look for them.
Just off the piazza there is an arcade that leads from the historic centre to modern day Udine, nowhere have I found such a change. You walk all the way down the arcade and walk out into a different time, it is slightly unsettling. Most cities have integrated their historical centre so that it leads gently into the 21st century, not so Udine.
I found restaurants hard to find, they don't have much to indicate where they are. Many don't have even a sign. One hint, if you want to eat in a restaurant, unlike the rest of Italy, they eat early in Udine. I met some friends and we ended up going back to our hotel as when we found a restaurant open it was quite crowded and was closing in about half an hour (8.30PM).
The Piazza is very photographic but try not to catch the locals because they aren't particularly happy about it, even people caught by accident seem to be scowling in mine. However, they are very nice people although a little reserved.

So lively and busy, a fab buzz. Nice to sit and watch the world go by in one of the many good bars / cafes!

This is a lovely square that is surrounded by nice restaurants, shops and the church. It’s conveniently located in the pedestrian center of Udine.

Square that definitely needs restoration, all buildings around it are in bad shape. One of them is already in some restoration process. The only good thing is lots of bars where you can sit and relax
