The old city of Trieste is very different from the Austrian-Hungarian part of the city. This part is older with narrow, cobbled and winding streets. Some streets/stairs climb up the hill - not difficult to walk. Lots of interesting buildings, churches, amphitheater and so on....More

The heart of the old city is on the top of a hill overlooking the bay, as may be expected, so involves some fairly steep climbs. However, packed into quite a compact area are ancient churches, cathedral, castle, forum and amphitheatre

The Old City is just as much part of the new city, but the streets are narrower and mainly cobbled. They twist and wind up the hill to the cathedral and make a really nice spot to stroll.

Not really worth a visit : the streets are steep, often deserted and with little charm or beauty. We did not feel fully at ease here. This is not a place you must have seen before you die !

The Citta Vecchia is most interesting and there are several buildings of great interest. It is very pleasant to stroll through this area.

Trieste is an interesting place. Getting around from a walking perspective is not all that easy. The waterfront and the flatter areas all offer an interesting take on the town of the centuries. The older areas up and around the hills also have their appeal....More

Probably my expectations were too high, but the Old Town of Trieste was somewhat disappointing compared to other Italian cities.

This part of the city was modernized in the last 10-15 years. It still has some attraction - Roman theater - but the real Old City feeling is not there anymore. This was actually the "ghetto" of the Jews, but today you wont find anything...More
