We literally stumbled across these very well reconstructed ruins built into the base of the San Giusto hill whilst walking down a staircase to the foot of San Giusto hill looking for a supermarket. The supermarket was only about 50 metres away which shows how closely located to the modern day city these ruins are even though they were originally built in the first century BC (and expanded in the 2nd century AD) outside of the city walls and along the waterfront. The whole site was surrounded by modern day buildings.
It is believed that the amphitheatre held from between 3,500 and 6,000 spectators and was divided vertically into sectors by five staircases and horizontally into two levels by corridor. A roof would have been supported by the large semi-circular wall that is visible built into the hill.
These ruins were hidden by houses that, over the centuries, were built over them and only came to light in 1938 during the demolition of part of the old city.

The story of how they found these ruins when they were restoring this part of Trieste is remarkable. What is left to see is in incredible shape and when you think of the activities that took place here with up to 5-6K people seated it really takes you back. If you park in San Guisto underground Parking Garage, when you come out on the street (auto) side take a right and it is right there, you can't miss it.

Roman open-air theater very well preserved and easily visible in the center of the city of Trieste.
In the past the theater was located outside the town, almost on the seashore, and was subsequently incorporated into the city and covered by houses. It was believed to have been destroyed, but it was found at the beginning of the 19th century, but only around 1940 was it freed and brought to light.
Really beautiful.

Must see, if you're in Treiste. But don't expect to got inside during the winter. This castle is located in an interesting part of Treiste. Nearby there's an ancient Roman arch, The Roman theater was completely cordoned off when I visited in Jan 2020. Come, take some photos.

At the time of its construction, between the 1st century BC. and the 2nd century AD, it was lapped by the waters of the sea which is now a few hundred meters away.
The audience, located on a hill, could contain more than 5000 people.
In the Middle Ages it was completely incorporated into a residential neighborhood.
It was then identified at the beginning of the 19th century and brought to light in the first half of the 20th century.
Nice but not accessible. It should be better valued.

the theater is located almost in the center of Trieste. can be visited directly from the road. excellent example of Roman architecture. definitely worth seeing, at least for its ease of access. from there we then proceed towards other places of historical and religious interest. However, it is worth a stop.

This is an important landmark in Trieste, every tourist has visited and will visit this place. It is located right in the city centre, I visited on my first day of course. Unfortunately in the opposite police building police officers were killed by a Dominican migrant a couple of days later..

Interestingly situated in the middle of busy roads. Most of it was 'out of bounds' and it looked as though it needed a bit of TLC

This Arena is small if you compare to others in the rest of Italy. Is in the middle of the city and just next to a street. I took a picture and continued my journey

It is close to everything else so take the time to walk over there. I have seen several Roman Theaters and it was interesting to see in surrounded by buildings, traffic, right in the city center.
