Aquiliea was one of the larger cities in the empire and, as the guidebooks explain, one of the few that simply faded away (as opposed to being sacked, destroyed by a volcano, or living on into the present). Once the main port for the region,...More

Walking through a major Roman city gave us an insight into the building ability of the Romans. Columns, layout of streets and homes showed the roman genius. A must see, because Venetians came from Aquileia. Great city of the Roman world.

Beats ruins in Rome on three basic scores – very accessible, free, and no crowds. It really is quite a sensation to view these ruins at sunset with no one else around, and imagining what a busy and hectic place it must have been at...More

A wonderful evocative space but with heavy reconstruction, but clear where that is. Info boards seemed minimal so bring a guide book.

We always try to read up on the places we visit which was fortunate for us since the signage was limited and all in Italian.

It's just standing there beside the road, but quite splendid and with a really strong sense of place - what a gem Aquileia is!

The forum may be "average for Italy", as someone else remarked, but none the worse for that. Like the Roman river port just down the road, it needs to be presented to the public rather better than it currently is. And it is shocking that...More

We came here and had a look around. Some really fascinating roman remains. Well worth going to see. There doesn't look much but there is. There was even some excavations going on which was also fun to watch.
