A large stone gate tower and one of the main entrances into the historic centre of San Marino. Also known as The Town Gate, it is an ancient watch post built in 1361 and restored many times. About halfway up the tower is a balcony and the adjoining room, although I couldn’t find a way in even after climbing the steps from the city side of the tower. Interestingly, the balcony has supports that look like machicolation. These are probably decorative as they are much too large and low to be effective defensive positions.

Part of the third ring of the city walls. The original gate was raised up by the construction of a tower with pinnacles and machicoulis. To this day, the coats of arms of San Marino and the Feltresca family can be seen.

San MArino is a must if you happen to be around it. One of the most beautiful and unique places which have preserved their century old traditions.

The medieval watchtower, which is also called Porta del Loco or Porta del Lucho, was built in the 14th century and intensively modified during the next two centuries. It is an impressive, well-preserved building which is the main entrance to the city, with a uniform guard regulating the incoming traffic.
