This was definitely the best, beating even the Basilica di San Vitale - even though the two should be taken in together, as the Mausoleum is in the back of the Basilica. Also a Unesco World Heritage site, and to me, the most amazing works of art and colour in the stunning and breathtaking mosaic covering every single square centimetre... More

It may be rather small, but the mosaic works inside are truly beautiful, and very well preserved. The ceiling mosaic works are most impressive. It's best to pay the full price for the 5 sites (San Vitale, Gala Placidia Mausoleum, plus other 3).

This little mausoleum is small enough you feel as though you could touch the brilliant mosaics on the ceiling. Not to be missed!

It's a Roman building with the oldest and best preserved mosiacs. Again, you have to queue to enter as it's popular and gets very busy but it is well worth the wait. Amazing ceiling mosaic decoration with the night sky, stars and a cross.

Galla Placidia's mausoleum dates back to the second quarter of the 5th century, and its mosaics have no trace of an eastern influence, as many others in Ravenna do. Instead, they were produced according to ancient Roman mosaics' techniques and style. Access to the mausoleum is through the Basilica di San Vitale, at the corner of Via Giuliano Argentario and... I never expected, in such a small mausoleum, such an astounding array of mosaic art. WOW! The blue and gold colors capture the eye as do the artfully done designs. I was captivated. Here the mosaics are closer to eye level and one can study the techniques of the mosaicists. No flashes are allowed but I was able to get... More

Unlike some mosaics...high up on ceiling you need binoculars to see... this location is small, and the decoration is nothing short of amazing and since the spot is small, they are easy to see. Check the web photos.

The mausoleum of the Roman Empress-Regent Galla Placidia is small but perfectly formed. As with its neighbour San Vitale, it is covered in exquisite mosaics, though these are around 100 years older. Galla Placidia herself sounds a remarkable woman, although they suspect she was never buried here. Also like San Vitale it is covered in beautiful little touches, including windows... More
