History

As a symbol of the Archiepiscopal Chancellery of Ravenna, San Vitale is one of the greatest works of late Roman art. Famous for its mosaics commissioned by Archbishop Maximian (546/556 AD), the basilica is a place of contemplation. While the body descends its steps the spirit rises to the Truth. A masterpiece to be admired for its evident beauty and its hidden, precise, evocative theological argument.

We only got to spend a half hour here with the tour guide, but more time was needed. The mosaics on the floor, on the ceilings, on the walls are all amazing. You could probably visit without a guide, but you’d be missing the history. While it was cold and dark inside, there is some light that comes in through... More

Being a colossal history geek and fan of Roman and Byzantine history in particular, I had wanted to see San Vitale for a while. It did not disappoint. The Byzantine mosaics themselves only cover the apse, but they are exquisite. If you go, look at each mosaic in turn for a couple of minutes. You will spot all kinds of... More

By far one of the most interesting and moving structures I've visited. Circular in design, with 1st and 2nd floors of arched ways. And as with other churches of this time beautiful mosaics! Make sure to visit the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia behind the main building.

The mosaics in the Basilica San Vitale are world class and should not be missed. If you want to see anything better you have to go all the way to the Chora Church in Istanbul.

The mosaics in San Vitale are absolutely spectacular. The floors are also quite beautiful. If you are in Ravenna, do not miss out on your opportunity to visit this basilica. After seeing it during the day, we were fortunate enough to be able to return at night for a concert (organ and trumpet), which was beautiful.

There's lot to see even if the basilica itself isn't too big. With the same ticket you can visit couple of sights and see some of the most beautiful mosaics in the world.

Once in a while you visit a place that is simply awe inspiring. I had heard about the mosaics for many years but had never been able to make the short drive from Bologna before. Getting tickets is fiddly as you have to go to separate ticket shop and walk back but for the price it is worth the admission.... More

Worth visiting first thing in the morning to avoid queues to enter the magical mausoleum of Galla placidia next door.
