Beautiful fountain with god Neptune and mermaids. Commissioned in the 16th century. The artist Tomaso Laureti designed the fountain in 1563 and the bronze statue of Neptune is a work of sculptor Gimbologna in 1567. The fountain was renovated many times after 1726.

This is a lovely and monumental statue, well located on the main square of the historical center. It has an Italian flavor with the kinky mermaids at the bottom. It is a great start to visit the center, or as a meeting point.

The fountain and its sculpture are one of the most iconic symbols of the city. This monumental fountain is located in the Piazza del Nettuno, next to Piazza Maggiore and it is a model example of Mannerist taste of the Italian courtly elite in the 16th century. The statue of Neptune is almost four meters tall and weighs 2,200 kilograms.
The Fountain of Neptune is a popular meeting point for locals. "Ci vediamo al Nettuno", you will hear them say.
Interesting fact: The trident of the Neptune's statue inspired and it was used by Maserati brothers as emblem for their first car.

This striking fountain can be found from Piazza del Nettuno next to Piazza Maggiore. The fountain was completed in 1566.
Under Neptune, four cherubs are holding dolphins which allegorically represent the four major rivers from the then-known corners of the world: the Ganges, the Nile, the Amazon River, and the Danube. Under cherubs, four lactating Nereids are holding their breasts, from which jets of water emerge.
You cannot say having visited Bologna if you have not seen this fountain.

One of the interesting things to see at Piazza Maggiore is the Neptune Fountain. This is the work of architect Tommaso Laureti and Giambologna (1563-66). It is a fairly typical depiction of the God of the Sea, a physical and commanding mythical specimen with trident.
Neptune stands upon a tiered pedestal with an accompaniment of putti, dolphins and nymphs sprouting water into a smaller basins which eventually spill into the ground level basin. It is an elegant fountain design that enjoyable to see when visiting Piazza Maggiore.

This fountain was lovely to see when I was there as it was in full working order. Neptune sits on top of a very decorative mass of sculptures which like him are all carved in black. The stone and it's outer walls are in contrasting white which makes all the figurines stand out more and give fabulous photo opportunities

Le due torri, The Two Towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, are iconic landmarks in Bologna and have become a symbol of the city. But the Neptune Fountain has become another prominent symbol.
This marble-and-bronze fountain features a muscular statue of Neptune holding aloft a trident. Neptune stands on a base with circular pools, four spouting sirens representing the four continents, and four cherubs representing the winds.

Nice surrounding buildings. Tip for the photographers: visit at dawn or on the sun set to avoid harsh midday light. A crowded place, yet you don't feel it too much. And you can always find a shadow there in a hot sunny day.

Fontana del Nettuno or the Fountain of Neptune is one of those sculptures that you cannot resist looking at. It is large, it is beautiful, it is sexual and it is controversial.
Viewing it from a certain angle reveals an optical illusion that Giambologna (the sculpture) created in protest of the church not letting him make Neptunes gentiles larger....as legend has it.
Regardless, it is a captivating sculpture with a unique history in Piazza de Nuttuno.

Is the water fountain turned off at certain times of the year? I visited Bologna in early March 2019 and while I I assume the restoration works were finished as there were no fences or any sign of work the fountain was not running. This was just after the winter storm had swept through Europe. Could it have been turned off due to that?

Hi Andher, when we visited in June the renovation was still happening. I would guess that it is completed by now but if not you can still get good views of the statue from the Piazza. There are many other wonderful things to see in the area. Enjoy your visit.

Why is the fountain currently fenced in? (Very difficukt to get a photo). Why is there no water flowing? Disappointed!

During the last year they have renovated it. I do not think they have finished their work, so the water has to wait.
