Cardinal Albornoz was responsible for the construction of many fortresses, built NOT to protect the citizens of the towns, but to dominate them! When possible they were battered down, leaving the stones littered on the hilltops,as in this case. The best thing here is the panoramic view...More

We paid to enter the fortress, Very, very little to see inside and the view from the top was barely an improvement on the view from the park outside. A complete waste of money.

The fortress is named after the Spanish cardinal Gil Alvarez Carillo de Albornoz. However, the fortress was built by his successor Angelico Grimoard in 1367-1371. Injustice happens often in history. Fortress is not important for tourists because of the military component. The fortress is located...More

Our B&B Albornoz was located 50m away from the entrance to the Fortezza grounds, so we would often drop by to enjoy the views over Urbino and the valley below (wonderful play of light with passing clouds) from the garden area. The fortezza itself seemed...More

You can take in the surrounding valley almost at 360°, the little hamlets, the larger villages, the gently rolling hills in this amazing park scattered with modern sculptures and dominated by the medieval Albornoz stronghold.

My wife and I visited the fortress and learnt about its amazing history. The fortress is quite stunning and matches the amazing views across the Italian countryside. The fortress has also been well maintained over time to reflect how magnificent it truly is.

The fortess is not much special, it was not even open when we visited it, but the view over urbino is certainly worth the climb.
