Neighbourhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighbourhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

There are few spheres similar to this around the world. They are kind of neat, but not worth a stop on an already busy day in my opinion.

This sculpture is very interesting to look at and is located in the Pigna Courtyard at the Vatican. The sphere is the same size as the one on top of St. Peter's Basilica so it really puts things into perspective! There is a cafe nearby as well but this area is quite bright in the day time so don't forget your sunglasses.

The sculpture was designed for the Vatican and is also displayed in Dublin, Tel Aviv, and the Italian Parliament. The form depicts the globe of Earth itself. This complex work of art, composed of a sphere growing inside another sphere, can be read as a symbol of the emergence of a new world from the old. You cannot really miss it, but it is striking and more information is given on the nearby information board.

The architecture is excellent. Our tour operator explained fascinating facts about it. The information board over there is a must read.

I was impressed by it's mere presence, but totally enchanted by it's movement around the axis, especially in the sunshine.

This piece of modern art does not at all create a rupture in the museums context. It is an interesting eyecatcher, leading you to the center of the parlour.

You can see this artwork as you walk through the museums, and it is very cool. It is located in the courtyard, so you can see it after you finish the museums and Sistine Chapel.

Sfera con Sfera or Sphere Within a Sphere, is a worldwide series of sculptures by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. The Milan-based artist began his series in the 60’s . These sculptures are bronze spheres of various sizes located in interesting places around the world. One of his monumental orbs is located on the Courtyard of the Pigna in the Vatican Museum. In one interview the artist said of his work: A sphere is a marvelous object, from the world of magic and wizards. It reflects everything around.... Lovely.

This is an interesting concept and modern piece of artwork found outside of the Vatican City museums and galleries. I couldn’t get a good read on the true meaning behind it, but the divisions and cracks within the sphere may represent to the way something is torn apart from the inside out. Hard to fathom but good on the eye.
