The area
Neighbourhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighbourhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

- EJM17 contributionsBeautiful place - book a tour for a better experienceWe booked a skip the line breakfast tour through Headout and so glad we did! The breakfast part was vile - but we had seen reviews so knew not to expect haute cuisine. Pourable scrambled eggs and cold potato wedges anyone? The best option to see the Vatican is to do an early skip the line. It’s still very busy but at least you won’t have a 3 hour wait to get in. The beauty of the place outweighs the crowds, it is breathtaking. Having a guide helped to fill in the background to what we were seeing, and our guide Sabrina was brilliant. The Sistine Chapel is very much a conveyor belt - quick look and move on - but the rest of the museums tour makes up for that. It’s impossible to see everything as it’s too vast, but we had a great time just the same.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023

It was a good choice for us as we skipped the line & able to see all of the historic artifacts. Weather was still warm in last week of September so stay hydrated.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 November 2023
- jo5 contributionsAmazing.Amazing trip and it's an incredibly unique place to visit. If you want to visit the Vatican I would recommend pre booking a skip the line tour. The only thing we missed out on was climbing up the basilica, which we did not hear about until there.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- TommoMelbourne, Australia55,939 contributionsA must visit siteThere are three big sites to visit in Vatican City: the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. Visit all three as its amazing. Avoid the tour with the lunch as it is poor. We only purchased the visit with lunch as its was all I could find as far as skip the line tickets.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024

We had a guided tour of the gardens and the hallway down to the Sistine chapel, which was amazing! I would definitely recommend booking a tour in advance as the queue was so long and we were able to walk straight in. Also the tour guides are so knowledgeable!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024

- BradHong Kong, China1,74,825 contributionsVatican Museums and St. Peter's BasilicaVatican City (Holy See) is an independent nation of 49 hectares surrounded by the city of Rome. It is also home of the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica, two of the most popular sightseeing attractions in all of Italy. Both are very crowded with many thousands of daily visitors, meaning it is best to know opening hours and have a plan in mind for your visits, each of which can take a significant amount of time. Entry to the Vatican Museum now start at €20 per person for general admission and are based on time slots. Various combo tickets and guided tours will cost you a bit more. It is recommended to book well in advance to ensure you secure tickets on the day you intend/plan to visit. Entry to St. Peter's Basilica is free but queues to clear security quickly extend all the way across Piazza San Pietro and take quite a while to clear before being able to enter. Both attractions have good websites with plenty of information related to collections and highlights, best to research in advance so you know what to look for and how to allocate your time, especially within the Vatican Museums, which has a lot to see. A leisurely visit within St. Peter's can easily last an hour or more while the Vatican can quickly take up 2-3+ hours if you plan to view all of the important collections, exhibition halls in addition to highlights like the Gallery of Maps, Raphael's Rooms and Sistine Chapel. Having a game plan in mind prior to your visit can greatly help in maximising your time sightseeing around Vatican City. Lastly, best to allow another half hour just to see and enjoy St. Peter's Square and another 45 minutes to an hour to make way to/from Vatican City depending on your mode of transportation. Octavian is the nearest Metro station, taxis and Uber can get you fairly close while many may chose to simply walk over from the city centre side of the Tiber River, enjoying other sightseeing along the way.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 June 2024

We booked a tour for the museums, Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. From the outset we were told that the Vatican was massively overbooking and we were unlikely to make it into the Basilica. The amount of time waiting to get in, even with the skip the line ticket, was long, and by the time we had audio guides etc we were unable to see anything within the museum. We had to move very quickly but there were just so many people that it was impossible to enjoy. We got to spend all of two minutes in the Sistine Chapel to ensure we could get to the Basilica. Be careful about the times you book tours for, ours was 2.5 hours starting at 10.45am, and it would have been impossible for us to do what was offered as the Vatican closes the entrance to the Basilica at certain times.

Luckily we purchased tickets to the Vatican museums and sistine chapel with an audioguide beforehand(we did this directly on the Vatican website). This enabled us to bypass the enormous queue for tickets(in February). Audioguide was good .short explanaitions of key exhibits which was perfect because we would have been there days otherwise -so much to see.

This is unbelievable! all the paintings and wall paintings look magical, and it is difficult to describe your impressions with words!
But be prepared for huge queues, because the queue of those who want to get to the Vatican is measured perhaps by thousands of people.
We took a guide and went into the general group through a separate queue - this significantly reduced the passage time (our waiting time in the queue took about 40 - 50 minutes).
The big plus is that the guide will be able to take radio and headphones for you, and you can hear it at any distance and stare around.

We took the bus number 64 from Roma Termini and it dropped us by the Vatican. Do not get off after the bridge when you see the Dome, it is the stop after this one ( second stop after the bridge). We had the tickets to skip the line for the museum and thought we were late but they don't check the time, so you can visit the Basilica before you head to the museum, which is about 10 mins walk from there. There are massive queues at the museum, if you want to visit get your tickets in advance. I would only recommend the museum if you are interested in Art and obviously the significance of certain paintings in Catholicism.

It is well worth your time to spend a number of hours here, between Saint Peters Basilica and the Vatican Museums. The square itself is just interesting to see and put into context what you see in movies and on TV and it is worth just sitting and trying to take in the amazing statues and architecture around you.
For our trip we got to the Vatican City at around 9.30am, we had planned to be there as early as we could as we did not book any tickets for the Basilica and we wanted to limit the time we would have to spend in line. The Basilica itself is free. The line looks more intimidating than it really is. We spent 30 mins between joining the line and getting to the door of the Basilica so that included going through the security check. The line itself stretched right across the square, but it was constantly moving.
Inside, we went straight to the line for the Dome. going up to the Dome involves walking up a number of steps. Tickets were €8 for using the stairs the whole way up to the top or €10 for skipping some of the stairs with a partial elevator trip. We chose the stairs only ticket and it worked out well as we wasted no time waiting in a second line for the elevator. The stairs range from being very wide to very narrow and very steep but are doable.
The Dome is amazing and well worth going up to see it, You first see the inside of the Dome and look down on the inside of the Basilica. You then go up more steps and you end up out the top of the Basilica looking down on Saint Peters Square. For only €8 we saw the Basilica from all angles which was great value for money . The steps on the way down from the Dome bring you directly into the Basilica and then you are able to view the inside.
We then had pre booked tickets for the Vatican Museum so we had to find the tour provider. The tour guide then showed us inside. Some people had bought tickets online and some people had pre booked tickets. The company we were it also accommodated a group that had arrived late for their entry time.
For the Vatican Museum you need an audio guide if you don't have an in person guide. There is so much to see in it and the audio guide does help give you some context to each room you are viewing. The highlights of the museum for me were the Maps room and the very last room on the museum map where we saw the vehicles that the Pope uses to travel in.
The Vatican City is well worth a visit on a trip to Rome. If you have to stand in a line for any length of time its well worth it and you will not regret it. I would advice planning ahead and seeing travel times for how long it takes to get to the Vatican City from your accommodation just to make sure you get the most out of your time there.

No passport required. Just walk right in and look at all the saints and architecture around. Be sure to visit St. Peter's Basilica! Eastern entrance leads you to the free area and there's a different, Northern entrance for the museums and Sistine Chapel both of which cost you 17€ to get in both of them as a combined ticket.

Iviisted the Vatican over 30 years ago and I marvelled as I walked its corridors and gazed atthe same sttues and paintings. It is overwhelming to see time suspended in theair and to be able to experience a sense of calmness that as everyting whirls around beyond its walls, the same faces and statues contine staring down at the spectator. Makesure to jump in atour, so many details and information is given that you tour becomes an arthistory experience. There aremany agencies just outside, make sure to hire ahead of time. Also, tours have certain priviledges in havingtheor own lines and thus move faster.

So before we start I am not religious by any stretch however my partner wanted to take a trip to The Vatican City. (Eyes rolled) We walked an hour from our Hotel purely because we wanted to see and explore more of Rome that way.
When we arrived to say I was overwhelmed by the sheer size & beauty was an understatement.
This place is stunning.
The architecture, the symmetry, everything is just amazing.
It's free to get into St. Paul's Basilica and it is well worth queuing to take a look, please remember to take your covid passport/green card when you visit as well as your fave mask that meets Italian requirements.
☆☆☆☆Please also note that men & women must have the tops of their arms covered and dresses/skirts must be below the knee and no shorts for men or women☆☆☆☆
We paid €5 euros each to go into a small museum located by one of the shops and again I'll be honest the items here made the crown jewels back home look insignificant. Definitely worth a look.
This place is amazing. Steeped in history and full of wonder & splendour.

OTAVIANO EXIT. Watch out for people with Official looking badges directing you to Vatican or Museums. This IS a SCAM. As “Official” as they are meant to appear, they are there to confuse and scam. If in dubt call for the Politzia or Carabinieri out loud- a stampeede might ensue. Trust only operators with actual verifiable business. I used Headout, but also Skip-the-line has good reviews. You will make a reservation prior to your desired date and you can check them out on Trip Advisor.
Be mindful to be respectful to operators and know a tour might delay a few minutes and you will not be the only one there. If you want swiss/atomic watch presicion and exclusivity you may want the private tours (spectacular price tags always guaranteed)
I enjoyed a whole day at Vatican museums at my own, want to stare at everything and sit down pace.
Bring some extra comfi shoes, a scarf to cover your spaggeti straps for Sistine chappel and roll up capris, because it is HOT with so many tourists. A post card suffices for a fan on a pinch (.50€) that weights nothing. Bring an extra camera battery (and a good meal before you come if you can nanage for energy). Have fun, dont be in a hurry. Ciao!
PS: The Etruscan exhibit is not too popular but is has no crowds and nice, quiet benches thay lays forgotten. Yey for achy feet!

We recently participated in a small 3 hour tour led by Maria of Brastours of the Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Bisilica, and the Sistine Chapel. For us this was likely a once in a lifetime experience. The museums, the church and the chapel were amazing. Maria is an excellent tour guide and she enhanced our experience significantly. She is very knowledgeable and is passionate about conveying what she knows. I highly recommend a tour of Vatican City with Brastours.

I don't think Vatican City is open 24/7.
You should be able to get more details from the official Vatican City website. I know queuing starts early morning. I would strongly advise booking a guided tour as the guides are extremely knowledgeable.
