This was quite a nice area for us because the sun was shining when we entered it. After the tours of the museums, you end up in this square. There is a pretty fountain, toilets, a post office, lots of beautiful architecture and statues and if you keep walking straight down you hit the touristy shops.

From the opening when you initially walk in to viewing from St Peter's Basilica you do not realize how enormous this area is. We were there 3times in a week when we were walking around Rome. Make it a must see, each time we were there we noticed something different! A lot of salespeople offering tours in AM hours.

Everyone should aim to see St. Peter's Square, Vatican City at least Once in their lifetime, it truly is a remarkable sight to behold and can only really be done in person. The architecture is simply stunning, you feel like a tiny insect among giants! We visited on Easter Sunday and managed to see the Pope from a distance so... More

Essentially you walk thru here in way from Vatican and that amble and a few circles round is enough. Good architecture and good meeting spot ...

A huge square with an Egyptian obelisk in front of St. Peter's Basilica. It was built by Bernini. There are many people and is crowded.

This is the entrance to the Vatican. It is where you can enter the inner part to access the Basillica or a good place to buy guides for the museums. The architecture is very impressive. Don't get this far and then not go in!

If you do not have time or failed to plan ahead to see the Vatican, at least go to St. Peter's Square and experience the beauty and of the fountain, statues, and surrounding architecture. Easily accessible by bus. You can buy postcards and stamps and mail from the Vatican.

You can see this for free but it does get very crowded. Another must see attraction if you're in Rome. Best to visit if the weather is nice.
