The view back to the basilica and through the rows of columns shows the careful planning of this space. It must be dramatic indeed at Easter, Christmas and other festivals. It was remarkably free from touts and salesmen of tourist tat. when we were there.

When in Rome... I've always been amazed at the size of St. Peter's Square. It's looming and beautiful. The history behind this beautiful place is worth hearing about.

On my first Europe trip , Vatican was of course on the list . But what made it more special was that we went there on Christmas and saw the papal address . There was a long queue but it moved pretty quick

There is a published schedule of these papal addresses in St Peters Square, but they tend to occur most Sundays at noon unless he is out of town. I saw online several queries how the logistics works and what time you need to arrive etc....More

A very busy square, with fountains, good place to stand and soak up the atmosphere. Watch out for pickpockets and traders trying to sell you items.

My advice is expect Large crowds, It will be very Crowded , probably very hot, get there as early as possible in other words probably not a good day to visit from a tourist point of view.
