This is not as busy a piazza as many throughout Rome. However, the historical obelisk is really neat. Plus, the real, administrative offices for Italy are straight north from the obelisk on this piazza. You need a special clearance / appointment to go into the offices. The Montecitorio obelisk is made of red granite. The obelisk was made in ancient Egypt under Psammetichus II (595 - 589 BC) from Heliopolis. It was brought here to Rome in 10 BC by Augustus.

Although there have been a number of trips to Rome, this Piazza was a new one and had evaded us. It was interesting with the Montecitorio Palace ( government) and the 21.8 Meter high Column and Obelisks of Montecitorio. This column originated in Egypt around 550 BC and was moved to Rome by Emperor Augustus in 10 BC

I went down a small side street leading out of Piazza Colonna and came to this square, which slopes sideways, being on the side of one of Rome's famous Seven Hills. On the right, there is a salmon-coloured building that's slightly bent back at the sides. It's at the highest part of the slope and is the most dominant building in the square. Its purpose has changed since it was designed in the 17th century by Bernini. Since the 19th century, it's where the Italian government's Chamber of Deputies meets (sort of the equivalent of the House of Commons). Mussolini also made it his parliament. Although the front is still 17th century, the interior was remodelled in early 1900s Art Nouveau.
A tall grey granite four-sided Egyptian obelisk rises up from the square's centre. The Romans brought this 2,600-year-old obelisk back from Egypt, as they did many other Egyptian artifacts. I find it grim-looking, and it thrusts up sharply into the air.
To me, this square has a raw and brutal look. I was there on a hot day, and the sun beat down but there weren't many places to take cover in the shade. It's an interesting change to come to this square after being in the pleasant Piazza Colonna.

We stayed at a hotel on the square without knowing the Parliament building was next door. It actually made the stay more pleasant because there was a lot going on in the square every day. There are vehicle security barricades but people can walk through without issue (unless changing of the guard or a band is playing). Expect to see TV news crews doing live reports throughout the day. Outside of the activity, it is a pretty basic square.

Not a whole lot to see in this square. The obelisk is cool though. Interesting to me to see the Parlement building. The square is more or less on the way between the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. You may as well walk by.

Beautiful facade of Palazzo di Montecitorio, the seat of Italian Parliament, dominates the piazza as well as the Egyptian Obelisk. There are also several other impressive buildings which deserve attention.

This Piazza has the Palazzo Montecitorio which is the Italian Chamber of Deputies. And of course there is an obelisk in the center of it which was excavated from the ancient Roman Solarium Augusti and installed in 1789.

Piazza di Monticitorio is a square just round the corner from Piazza Colonna and not far from the Pantheon. It is a quiet square where the Palazzo di Montecitorio is located. In the centre of the square stands an Egyptian obelisk.

A quiet piazza housing part of the Italian Parliament and an Egyptian Obelisk. A walking haven of tranquillity sandwiched in between the hubbubs of The Pantheon and Via Del Corso. Pleasant to stroll through and take a breath.
