Fantastic guide, and a great day!

My wife, two children (26 & 21) and I took the tour. Our guide, Sarah, was amazing! She grew up and has lived in the area her entire life and her grandmother still lives there so she had incredible, detailed and personal knowledge she was able to share. We learned a lot, and the tour was everything we hoped for... More

My husband and I recently returned from a wonderful visit to Rome. Our first visit. We spent Christmas Day on a tour of the former Jewish Ghetto provided by Sara of Jewish Roma Tours. The Jewish district is currently compressed into several blocks of apartments, restaurants, a few shops and the beautiful Great Synagogue. It made all the difference having... More

Micaela and the other guys showed us the entire ancient Jewish neighborhood (if you visit Rome, you have to see it) and not only. Every story was very interesting and I loved the way the guide involved us in the tour. We had an unforgettable time. Strongly recommended

We booked five private tours through Micaela's company -- the Ghetto area, the Jewish Catacombs, the Vatican/Sistine, Ancient Rome, and a walking tour of Rome -- with three different tour guides. Each of the tours and each of the guides was outstanding; informed, personable, well integrated into the community, and attentive to both our interests and our personalities. Although we... More

This is a tour mainly directed to Jews but not only. The tour informs about the Jewish presence in Rome, ( dating back to B.C. era) and does while walking in the Jewish ghetto. Its informative, interesting not only to Jews and worthwhile spending an hour or so.

Micaela Povoncello was an amazing guide who was engaging, knowledgeable and entertaining. We did the tour of the Ghetto. We learned a great deal about the history of the Ghetto but Micaela added a personal touch which brought the ghetto to life. I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in getting to know the Jewish ghetto but also Roman culture... More

It was terrific to tour Rome's Jewish Ghetto with Micol Piazza, a woman whose family had lived in Rome for 2000 years! Micol was a great guide. She seemed to know most people we passed on the street and she was able to tell us stories about her family and her husband's family experience as Jews in Rome through the... More

We toured the Jewish Ghetto with Michaela Pavoncello. Michaela was very knowledgeable and truly engaging and funny. A very personally insightful few hours of touring, inclusive of factual historical information past and present & a visit to a local bakery in the Ghetto to conclude our tour. The tour is a must when you visit Rome. Have traveled to Rome... More

We had only a short time in Rome at the end of a cruise. To make the best use of our time we contacted Jewish Roma. Their guides and choice of sites are excellent. You do not have to be Jewish to benefit from Jewish Roma's tours. They present a part of Rome's history in depth that would otherwise be... More

Staying in Ghetto

Neighbourhood Profile
Ghetto
The mini-neigbourhood Ghetto holds tight to its reputation as a stand-alone area thanks to its nearly 300-year history as the home to Rome’s Jewish community. Times changed in the 20th century, but the tiny area still retains its mix of tradition, community, and history. Ancient and medieval architectural design frames apartments, bakeries, shops, and restaurants. Friends and families are the pulse of the neighbourhood, keeping company on the Via del Portico d’Ottavia. The Ghetto observes the traditional Jewish Shabbat: businesses close from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown.
