The name of "Banchi", extended to the area which also includes via del Banco di S.Spirito and via dei Banchi Vecchi, refers, in fact, to the counters where shopkeepers, bankers, notaries, scribes and merchants of all kinds carried out their business, taking advantage of the proximity to the church of S. Pietro.
Via dei Banchi Nuovi corresponds to the initial stretch of the ancient "via papalis" or "Pontificia", and took the name of "Banchi Nuovi" when the transfer of the Papal Mint from Palazzo Sforza- Cesarini to the Banco di S.Spirito palace induced the Florentine bankers to open their exchange offices in this stretch of the street.
There are numerous shops, especially for curious objects, ancient armor, fabrics ... but nothing really particular.
During the beautiful days,it is worth to take a nice walk and admire the Piazza dell'Orologio with its beautiful tower along the way.

Stayed in an apartment on this street. As it turned out it was a fortuitous choice. This is a central location for most attractions (we walked from here to The Vatican, Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori, Museum of Rome, Spanish Steps, The Pantheon, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain). There are lots of little shops and restaurants in this street. It is a couple of minutes walk to the main street for buses. We are staying in Rome again next spring and have booked an apartment about 100m away from this street as we liked the location so much.

Roma A.D is a shop that sells italian ceramics from Umbria (Deruta), Castelli, Vietri, Bassano, etc. Dishes, panels, some paintings, unique pieces from Turingia and from France. What a joy for those who love the hand made traditional ceramics! Highly recommended.

This is one of the most beautiful streets to stroll down and check out all the shops. The street was built by Pope Sixtus IV in the 16th century. Its name was chosen to differentiate it from the nearby Via dei Banchi Vecchi, which is where bankers had their offices during the previous century and where the very rich Alessandro Chigi had his 'bank'. The street was part of the papal road that led from the Vatican to the Lateran. Over time, it became more magnificent and elegant thanks to the construction of palazzi that powerful members of the Curia took as their residences.
