It is the most imposing monument in Rome, the main one in Piazza Venezia, which could be mistaken for an old palace, and you can visit the interior for free, except for the highest part which has an observatory, at a cost that I was unable to find out.
Next to it we can see some fountains and other large statues.
It is named in honor of Vittorio Emanuele II (1820-1878), the first king of Italy.
It is not accessible to people in wheelchairs and is not recommended for anyone who has difficulty climbing steps.

Wonderful monument, spectacular view. You go back to the past to touch history. I climbed by elevator, up to the terrace, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city and you can locate many Roman beauties. Recommendation the combined visit to Palazzo Venezia, where you can enjoy absolutely exceptional room.

Always liked looking at it passing by, but when we actually found the time to visit it, I was so impressed, it made me regret we didn’t do it earlier. The monument is massive! Beautiful! Grand! Majestic! It offers amazing views on several points, including the Colosseo. We really enjoyed strolling around. It’s free except the elevator to the panoramic terrace up high and the museum. Next time we’ll definitely go do that. Definitely recommending to stop by for at least the free part like we did.

Breathtaking the way up the many, many stairs .... especially with temperatures around 33° Celcius !
But you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view from the top, great to enjoy ... and for picture taking.
Very crowded, but no problem as the monument is really huge and you'll find a place to sit in the shadow an to chill, but not on the steps...😉
Free entry (except for temporary exhibitions).

The sheer scale and garish extravagance of this building is immediately eye-catching.
Every passing tourist will pause to look at it on their way to the Colosseum and the Forum. I suspect though that many tourists don’t realise that you can go inside for free.
Built to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861, the centrepiece of the complex is the whopping bronze equestrian statue of the first king, Vittorio Emanuele. You can see this from the street but it’s so big that it’s hard to get a real sense of its massive scale from here (at 10m long and 12m tall, it would take 7 people standing on top of each other to match its height).
It is free to climb the staircase to the upper levels where you can get a closer view of the statue, and also an elevated outlook over the city.
Halfway up, is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the eternal flame. We were lucky with the timing and were able to see the changing of the guards. This was a short but moving spectacle which was free to watch. We were there at midday but I believe that it happens every hour, on the hour.
It is a lot of stairs but it's worth going right up to the the portico level. With its long towering row of 15 metre tall Corinthian columns, the portico is very impressive.
You can go even higher and take the glass elevator to the very top of the building but if this seems a bit pricey (€15), do what we did and just walk around the free viewing areas at the cafe level. From here, you have panoramic (although not 360 degree) views.
Entry is free to most areas in the building (except for the Risorgimento Museum and elevator) but, apart from the viewing terraces on the upper floor, there is not a lot to see inside so if you are short of time, you can easily skip this.

Complesso del Vittoriano is a vast complex. It was opened in 1911 to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861, by the king Vittorio Emanuele II, also regarded as the "father of the Nation" by Italians. The building is also known as Altare della Patria (the Tomb to the Unknown Soldier) and as the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II. Some people have jokingly called other names, like the Wedding Cake or the Typewriter, due to its peculiar shape! It is nevertheless a grand monument and very popular. Inside the "guts" of the building there are various activities, such various exhibitions, which worth seeing, and everything is free, to see! This monument is definitely worth visiting. It is easily recognizable and it dominates Piazza Venezia in the centre of Rome, a very busy area, full of cafes, restaurants, other shops and people.

This review is done is done from a disabled person perspective.
I have a damaged spine after an a bad accident and walk but needs sticks to do so. It would be easier in a mobility scooter but I'm not ready to admit defeat yet.
Made this place as part of a round Rome trip.
The place is stunning to look at with great views. The museums are informative and for anyone good on their feet this is a nice place to visit.
However I was treated very rudely and with disrespect. Had I been at home I would have reported it.
I asked on of the attendants is I could use the lift to get me upstairs. I was to NO as this is for only the those people with sevear disabilities. Feeling a little annoyed I set off up the stair which took me 20-30 minutes.
When I got to the top I saw the same attendant offloading able bodied passengers (some were children)from this lift.
Let's just say the attendant now knows the English phrase "you racist, discriminative @@@@@@"
Not sure what nationality the riders were but none of the comments were in English.
Don't like to be negative about such a nice place but had this treatment in several places in Rome where the disabled are treated like 2nd class with disabled and English treated like 3rd class
None of us are looking for special treatments but this type of thing is simply wrong.

My husband took me to Rome for my 30th birthday and we walked past the Vittoriano daily, often using it as a navigation tool (spotting it meant we were near our hotel). On walking past - and around the City - I saw adverts for 'Barbie: The Icon' an exhibition.
Finding information online about the exhibition proved difficult (on my phone, a laptop internet search at home has since been more fruitful) but I was able to find out that the exhibition was at the Vittoriano. Seeing that this is time-limited - until October 2016 - and being unsure where else the exhibition may be shown I was keen to see it.
It was 10 euros admission without reductions for holding a Roma Pass.
The exhibition displayed several hundred Barbie dolls including ones with brown hair, dark skin and replica designer dresses which I'd never seen, or even known about, before as well as lots of information on the evolution of the Barbie doll over the years. There was a gift shop selling a range of Barbie items at the end. There was quite a bit of open space with the exhibition not really filling the room it was designated to and getting round the whole thing took about 30 minutes but I enjoyed it.

Visited early evening in June 2013 (not 2014).
This monument is a great place to visit, it stands out amongst the city as it is a gigantic white building amid all the terracotta roofing and brickwork. There is a museum inside which is nice but the best part of the monument is the roof. You will have commanding views of the entire city, it was one of my favorites in the entire city - second to the Colosseum.
Make sure to come here mid-day as the monument seems to close in the early evening.
DO NOT sit on the steps, you will be promptly asked to move by one of the guards.
*Secret - there is a cafe at the back of the museum (about half way to the top) which is not very expensive and has a nice view of the Colosseum. Also, it will not cost you anything to get to it as there is a fee to access the roof via the glass elevator in the back.

Si può salire sul Vittoriano con un piccolo cagnolino?
Written 11 December 2020
Hello, do you need to pay for a ticket to go to the top of the building to see the views, or is this included in the free entry? Thanks
Written 17 October 2019
The panoramic rooftop terrace is accessed by an elevator. To use the lift, you need a ticket for a fee. Admission to the terrace is not free but you have to pay. I highly recommend going there because the view from the top is spectacular, especially when the weather is good.

Ver Roma do alto é sensacional. Vale cada centavo pago para utilizar o elevador panorâmico. A bilheteria fica ao lado do elevador e não precisa de comprar antecipado.
