Built in 1920 as a village, long misunderstood and underestimated, today Garbatella has recovered all that attention once denied.
It is one of the trendiest neighborhoods, more on a human scale and more coveted: the redemption of an area that is still authentically popular and full of surprises.
Garbatella was officially born on February 18, 1920: the first stone was laid by King Vittorio Emanuele III in what is now Piazza Benedetto Brin.
Architecturally, the primary inspiration of the new district was the concept of the English garden city, albeit revisited: a complex of single-family houses with internal courtyards and plots of agricultural land.
The logic is that of the lot, which is the real protagonist of the urban planning of the district: the historical part of the Garbatella developed and built in the first years of life around 62 lots.
What is striking is the variety of styles of the different buildings of the historical Garbatella , among which the "Roman baroque" stands out, visible in many buildings in the district, a style that became typical of popular housing in those years.
From an architectural and urban point of view, the final result at Garbatella has become a real "subject of study" by architects and urban planners from all over the world.
Among the things to see in Garbatella you can find Piazza Bededetto Brin.
The focal point of the square is the Art Nouveau building which has an entrance arch in the central area, through which you can discover the first lots built, with a country flavor surrounded by land, gardens and small courtyards.

Everything about this little neighborhood is fantastic! It is such a close hop to all things in Roma! More importantly, you actually FEEL like a Roman when you stay in Garbatella!

We are on Via Caffaro and this street has so many delicious treats from our local Gelato guy to the amazing vino bar up the road and around the corner. 13 Gradi La Mescita (say hello to Mauro for us!)- The vino is outstanding and the aperitivo is divine.

The apartments or flats are authentic to the period of socialistic architecture - three or more tall structures that face each other, allowing for neighborhoods to be built as communities. Laundry swings from makeshift lines, the massive amount of antenna makes you feel the aliens are sure to land soon but overall I wouldn't ever stay anywhere else -- "when in Rome...."

And finally - EATALY is in Garbatella! If for no other reason - come for the shopping and stay for the wine!

Garbatella isn't for everyone: it isn't for shoppers (most of the stores are on its northern border, the business-like boulevard, Circonvallazione Ostiense), and it isn't for those seeking a high-level dining or wine-bar experience (though we did find a comfortable wine bar and several good restaurants). Garbatella is for those with an interest in 20th-century architectural and design history; those with an interest in the politics and aesthetics of Italian Fascism; those who savor the mystery created by hills, curving streets, and enchanting stairways; and those seeking a glimpse of the historical experience of Rome's working class. We put an itinerary within a blog post on our romethesecondtime blog, and Aristofane - who wrote the first review of this 'hood, suggested we write a review of it as well.

It really is a great place to wander around. I'll leave the facts and explanations to the other reviewers, as some have given some good background information. I wish I'd read it before I visited, as I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do or see... until I just settled into seeing these wonderful, old, neglected apartment buildings and the charming cobblestone streets that made me daydreamy and glad I was in Rome.

For some real and authentic atmosphere of Rome go to this quarter of Rome which was planned and constructed some exact 100 years ago. It seems sleepy and a bit run-down but that's exactly why it's so charmant. If you happen to go here on the weekend visit the Farmers Market where you can buy wholesome fruits and vegetables and not only. Also you can eat here. Also go to see the Spizzichino bridge and Eataly.

Garbatella is one of the most iconic neighborhood of Rome.
Very quiet at any time and very characteristic.
On there we had a visit to bar dei cesaroni, a small bar where during the summer they make an Italian famous series .
The owner of the place is too kindly and very helpful for anything u ll ask.
Fantastic atmosphere, I felt home!

This neighbourhood sprang up in the 1920's as a housing project for the workers of the developping portuary system of Rome. Following a 'socialist' philosophy of supporting the working class, a number of modern housing blocks with communal parks and gardens were built up. It was meant to foster a sense of community, equality and empowerement amongst the residents. A bold experiment for the times. Now, it is a quiet, clean and nice neighbourhood with character and plenty of services. Served by the Garbatella metro, the Ostiense train station and bus lines it is close to all of Rome's attractions. You can even walk to the Appia Antica regional park.

Scootered through Garbatella yesterday with Scooteroma. Very interesting neighborhood, so different from much of Rome, with the feeling of a little village. Fascinating to learn about the neighborhood's history, and see the interesting architecture and street art. Looking forward to exploring it some more.
