One of the quietest sites we visited but also possibly the most interesting. The ticket included an audio guide so you can go round the museum at your own pace. This nicely prepares you for the Crypt, including explaining about the Capuchin order and the meaning of the burial site. The Crypt itself is six small rooms, five of which are filled with bones and mummified monks. The result isn't as creepy as you would expect and is actually quite moving, but there are almost four thousand monks on display - visitors should be aware as it could make some uncomfortable. Site has pleasant staff, WC facilities and a small gift shop. They do cater to children as there is a separate audio guide for young visitors, but no one in our party listened to this so can't vouch for quality.

One of us (not me) is fascinated by this type of thing. The headset as you walk through the small museum is quite informative in a story telling way. The crypts - if I looked at the layout of the bones as art it was Ok. But thinking how these were actual people at one time and now their bones are decorating the walls, well, I found it a bit off-putting.

One of the most interesting, macabre, nerve striking places I’ve visited. The museum hosts an original Michelangelo painting that very detailed and beautifully done. They give you an audio player so you can do a self guided tour. I thought the narrations were okay - it’s styled as if the narrator is having a conversation with someone. I found it distracting and would have preferred just the facts about what was on display. Once you make your way through the gallery, you will enter the crypt. The crypt took me by surprise because I was not expecting to see thousands of bones used as artwork or incorporated into the structure of the crypt. That was a Lille unnerving and I’m still not sure how I feel about that. I’m glad I went, but wished I read beforehand so my mind was expecting what I saw. Otherwise, it was the most interesting part of the exhibit. I highly recommend visiting here, but I don’t think I’ll go again - definitely once was enough. Seeing the bones in person made it more real that what you see in a book. Essentially knowing these are real people. Also, dress appropriately because they will ask you to buy something to cover your shoulders and thighs. They sold a wraparound for about 1 eur.

The museum of the order of the Capuchin monks is pretty interesting. You get an audio guide which provides some information about the history of this order and some of the exhibits on display. The main attraction is of course the crypt which consists of about seven displays made with the bones of deceased monks. The audio guide describes these displays as serene and somehow artistic. I found them to be quite shocking but still interesting. Just be aware that you can't take pictures in the crypt.

This is very easy to do on your own. You don’t need a tour. Just take the metro to Barberini and walk a block away. You can save the money by going without a tour. No pictures are allowed. It takes about 20 minutes to do the whole thing. There are museum exhibits and then the crypts with the bones. Once is enough for me.

It's cretrainly worth the visit, but probably not on your first trip to Rome and not if you only have 3 days. It's so weird to see that it's hard to be spooked by it or try to focus on the deeper meaning. I mean, how did anybody ever think to make floral decorations from human pelvis? My son of 10 didn't find it scary or creepy at all, but might be a bit too much for younder children.

It took some convincing for me to get my wife to agree to take our family here. Very glad we did. It is probably not for everyone's taste, but the crypts were truly striking. Beautiful and captivating. Left a definite impression.

I last visited the Capuchin Crypt 11 years ago. Went back again now and was still so amazed by the artworks created by human bones. The museum is also very informative and well worth a visit when in Rome. Remember to cover up your knees and shoulders when entering. Alternatively you can purchase a poncho there too.

We visited during our stay in Rome last week and although I had read about it it was quite different to what I’d expected. I don’t know why but I assumed what I was going to be seeing would be underground in some kind of dark narrow chambers but this wasn’t the case. It was a very different experience and extremely interesting. Both myself and my husband stood for ages looking at the displays and trying to take it all in. We didn’t book in advance and payed on arrival with no queuing, it was very quiet. X

This was probably the main highlight in all our visits to Rome over the last few years. Not sure why we didn’t visited this place earlier. Each display was artistic and holy rather than morbid. The visit will probably be ingrained in my mind for a long time…an experience that I will not forget. Not your usual tourist attraction, and perhaps not very appropriate and appealing for kids.
