We had a tour booked with Walks to see this and other locations (do not use them!) when they cancelled this part of the tour without notice. We ended up having an extra day in Rome and figured out the public bus transportation which dropped us off about a 10 min walk from the catacombs, where we paid the 10 Euros per person entrance fee, I am so glad that we decided to make the effort to see this on our own. They have guide led tours in all different languages every half/hour. The guide explained how the catacombs came to be and then led us through a maze of tunnels where they had laid the bodies to rest. Be aware - there are no longer any skeletons there - they have been relocated to rest elsewhere. But still, to think this was all dug out by people so long ago is pretty amazing. We enjoyed seeing the whole tour. P.S. Bathrooms are on site. Public bus easy to use to get back to Rome center.

Great tour of the Catacombs of Saint Domitilla led by Katie, who obviously has a passion for this ancient place. The catacombs aren't spooky, but fascinating, as you realize that they spread for seemingly endless kilometers around you. Amazing to see and feel the history, both the pre-Christian and Christian eras of this burial site. Katie really took time to explain the use of the catacombs, the history itself, and the artwork that can be seen inside. Really a neat visit!

Absolutely amazing experience. We took the bus out of the city to go to the catacombs. There were hardly any tourists which was nice as well. We also got a guided tour just for the two of us. the gentleman who took us around was awesome! Such a shame I didn't ask for his name. I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone. It's breathtaking and gives you an idea how life was like during the Roman times outside of the city walls. We were speechless and very impressed after this tour. An absolute must!

The so called tour was a quick walk through a few passages led by a guide who many could not hear as there were no listening devices provided. The spiels from other groups in the vicinity also made hearing problematic. The entire tour underground could not only have been 20 or so minutes and there was no provision to look into many of the open 'rooms' off the main track. Most of the time was spent in the chapel where the introduction was made. A greater disappointment with little sensory experience.

It was a very interesting and above all informative experience for us.
We had a guided tour in German and were taken into a fascinating story in the catacomb. With a lot of enthusiasm we learned a lot about the history of this catacomb but also about the artistic beauty of this place. I have been to other catacombs before, but the experience made in the Domitilla Catacomb is an absolute highlight of this trip to Rome.

The Catacombs of St. Domitilla were amazing! We learned so much, and experience that kind of history, so up-close and personal, really brings the past to life. Expertly guided through the dark catacombs by an experienced and friendly guide, we had no trouble at all, and found it very easy and rewarding. I'd recommend these catacombs to anybody.

We took Bus 30 from Victor Emmanuel Monument. At €1.50 a ride it’s definitely a good way to get to the catacombs.
We didn’t prebook a tour. Paid our €10 each at the door and waited a short time for the next English tour. Fascinating history of how early Christians were buried. Bodies weren’t allowed to be buried within the ancient walls of Rome hence the 60 or more catacombs along the Appian Way. You must go with a guide and it wouldn’t be hard to get lost in this underground maze. Well worth a visit. We toured Catacombe San Sebastiano afterwards. Another great tour and some different information and items on display.
There are vending machines outside selling drinks and snacks and a wonderful shaded garden with several picnic tables. We had brought a picnic lunch with us and were happy to get out of the hot sun. From here it’s an easy 15 minute walk to C. San Sebastiano then another bus ride back to the centre of Rome. Such a nice break from the crowds.

We were in the Domitilla Catacombs as a family in August 2023.
Our guide "Lorenzo" mastered the tour perfectly and took a lot of time. Instructive, interesting stories, and was very understanding when it came to children's questions! Excellent!
Stories about the creation of the catacombs, the development of burial culture,
corridors with niche graves carved into the tuff,
stone tablets with Latin inscriptions, Alpha and Omega and Christ's monogram Chi-Rho ☧,.
Stories about martyrs, bishops and popes who were buried, the creation of special places of veneration of saints with church services, gatherings to commemorate the dead with the traditional funeral meal.
Lorenzo gets 5 stars!!!
Best wishes, the Huttny family

Our flight was canceled and we had a bonus day to explore! I chose the catacombe for my husband and I to visit. I only wished we could have seen a bit more! The descriptions online refer to this place as a creepy and thrilling tour, so naturally we expected to see something a bit creepy. However, it was very tasteful and respectfully shown to us which I appreciated. Great, short, informative tour. And a bonus break from the crazy summer Rome heat!

We did this guided tour with Mike from RomewithMike. He is an excellent guide, so knowledgeable and extremely funny. Absolutely loved every minute and can’t recommend Mike enough. A definite 5* experience.

Would this be appropriate for young children to see? Nothing too scary/unexpected, right?
Written 8 June 2018
Nothing scary, but be aware that you move under the ground and in a narrow path. As long as your children are not afraid, you would enjoy it.

Dear People:
While I have looked on the official site for Domitilla Catacomb tours, I am confused if we need to purchase tickets in advance or is pre-purchase only for groups. We are a couple who intend to visit in the later part of October 2018. Thank you so much for your time!
Sincerely,
Jennifer

I see that it says there are discounts for military personnel on their website, is that just for locals or could a member of the British military get the discount too?

We are headed to Italy late March and would like to visit the Catacombs you mentioned in your review. What is the best way to get there from the Colosseum? We will not have a car and will be traveling by train.

are there scheduled times for English language tours? I did not see anything in their website.
Written 29 June 2017
No I don't think there are scheduled times for English tours. We were in a group and we were given an excellent English guide. I would think when you turn up you will be allocated with one too. It was not very busy when we arrived, so I don't think you will have any problem. It is a place of great interest and a place not to be missed!
