Trastevere, the area “across the Tiber,” is one of the city’s most striking quarters, a maze of narrow, cobbled alleys and where we stayed for five days. Once home to the city’s poor, it has witnessed gentrification with fashionable clubs, restaurants, and boutiques. At the...More

When we visited this church which is located in a great square for food and having a nice glass of red wine, our guide told us that this is where thieves would go to church. Prior to entering they had to leave their guns and...More

It was covered for cleaning or restoration on the outside and certainly wasn't much to look at but the inside is absolutely amazing. If you are in Trastevere, you should stop in. Only takes a few minutes but it is spectacular.

It may be more austere than other Roman churches in style but it is still a beautiful church. They are currently restoring part of the exterior but the interior is just fine.

plan half of the day to have a stroll through Trastevere - start with Santa Maria and then visit the picturesque area with lots of great places to eat and have a rest watching people and enjoying the ambiance... much better than Vatican!

Forget St Peter and the Basilicas. Go to Trastevere (across the river) and discover this gem! The environment is lucky and good restaurants and ice small shops abound!

I'll lead by advising that I was raised Catholic in hyper-drive. But an IRISH AMERICAN Catholic and it is this sort of Duomo that made me want to stay out of the Churches in Italy. It's just incomprehensible to me that this much gold, art,...More

Another beautiful church you must see. This church is in Trastevere. The neighborhood across the Tiber river. There is no cost to get in, but you must dress appropriately.

Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded
postcard, a little worn around the edges but still
charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering
streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and
overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible
mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of
entertainment - a rotating set of street performers
entertains almost every night, and unforgettable
