Piazzale Garibalbi is one of the highest spots in Roma & offers the best views of Roma of a night. Certainly worth a visit when in Roma

This was not even on our list when we hastily planned a long weekend in Rome from Naples. Fortunately, we’d met a born and raised Roman on our travels and contacted her for some suggestions. She directed us here and so glad she did. The park at the top of the hill is nice and the views of the city from here are likely the best you will find. Along the park there are several spots to stop for a look and the views but the best and most popular is at Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi. Here you will get some fantastic and sweeping views of the city. There will likely be some live music and also there are a couple little bars and food trucks where you can get a small snack or some beverages to enjoy the view for a little while. We came up the hill from the north and left to the south and saw the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola on the way down the hill to the bustling and popular Trastevere neighborhood where there are many great restaurants for a meal.

Went here today to see the cannon shot at noon, just below Piazzale Garibaldi, which was fun to see. The giant monument to Garibaldi stands in the center of the piazza, and there is a great view of Rome here, as well as several places to get a light snack or drink.

I really supposed the noon blank cannon fire wasn't operating nowadays...
Really it is !
Then I went, and I watched it. If you plan visitng the Gianicolo terrace view point to admire the panorama...let's go there at noon, every day, for the extra show !!!

Stayed in Trastevere. Walked up on a Sunday morning. Real Italians at play. Very mellow. Beautiful and fun to here the canons go off.

Great hilltop views of the city on Janiculum Terrace, with some interesting monuments like this one on top. It is a steep climb from Trastevere, so I recommend taking the 115 bus to the top (the bus goes by the beautiful fountain Fontana dell'Acqua Paola along the way) then you can walk along the top and take the 115 bus back across the Tiber River to the main part of Rome.

Above Trastevere, at the top of Gianicolo (Janiculum), (not one of Rome's seven hills but damn nice anyway) the Piazzale Garibaldi looks east over Rome and commemorates the city's heroes in the 19th century Risorgimento (unification of Italy). Nearby, along the bust-lined Passagiata to the Via Garibaldi is the Fonte Acqua Paola, a huge, beautiful 17th c. fountain, and below that a monument to the fallen of the short-lived Roman Republic of 1849. We walked up and had hoped to visit the Botanical Garden so we went into the park below the Piazzale, but unfortunately it is accessible only from the lower entrance in November, resulting in a bit of a deathmarch through a badly maintained park, so if on foot keep to the paved Passagiata along the edge of the park. However you get there, the views from the Piazzale are memorable.

You can either take a taxi or walk like we did up to this Piazzale for some of the loveliest views of the city. It was quiet and especially beautiful at sunset.
