- RazorfishLittle Rock, Arkansas5,287 contributionsExpansive piazza with beautiful fountainsThe Piazza Navona is a wonderful expansive piazza that epitomizes the atmosphere of Rome. It has the baroque architecture and Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers and an openness that is very appealing. It is near many restaurants, three of which we dined at during our extended weekday in Rome following a Viking Ocean Cruise. We strolled through it several times during our visit to Rome this past November.Visited November 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- Osman BBeirut, Lebanon658 contributionsProbably the Most Famous Piazza in RomeThis is probably the most famous Piazza in Rome. Large pedestrian open space full of baroque architecture marvels namely the Bernini's Four Rivers fountain. Full of street artists, performers and painters. Surrounded by restaurants and coffee shops. It is a place not to be missed once in Rome.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 October 2023
- Lindsay SBoston, Massachusetts98 contributionsloved it!I came here the morning that I arrived in Rome and had a great time. The piazza is stunning, as is the church inside. It's all free to visit and I had some lovely weather, too. Awesome place to spend a few hours enjoying magnificent architecture and food + drinks, which are served by several nice restaurants around the square. If you're visiting Rome, put Piazza Navona on your list for sure.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 10 November 2023
- Timothy MSan Francisco, California293 contributionsLovely area with beautiful fountains.This is one of my favorite places to visit in Rome. It was once a Roman arena but it is now filled with many restaurants and cafes ( a little expensive but worth it to get a drink and take in the sights ). There are three fountains with the center one being the most spectacular. It is also only a short walk to the Pantheon. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Piazza.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 November 2023
- TommoMelbourne, Australia55,980 contributionsLarge vibrant square in the historical areaWe were staying nearby and it was only a 5 minute walk to this large vibrant square. Piazza Navona has three impressive fountains, including la Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi with its large obelisk at the centre. The baroque church of Sant'Agnese in Agone is also located nearby. Surrounding the square are many restaurants and bars. Its long oval shape was the result of being the site of the Stadium of Domitian - where festivals and sporting events took place. This is a really pleasant and vibrant place to hang out, have a drink alfresco or dine at one the many restaurants in the piazza and people watch. Its a must visit when in Rome.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 December 2023
- Herbert C1,791 contributionsPrettiest piazza in RomePiazza Navona was built on the site where the 1st century Stadium of Domitian (Circus Agonalis) once stood with 20,000 spectators cheering over athletic competitions, thus defining its present elongated oval shape. It was eventually converted to a delightful public square since the 15th century, hosting many festivals and theatrical events over the centuries which continues till today with street performers such as dancers and magicians enlivening the atmosphere. It is also the site of Rome’s main Christmas Market in December. The piazza is a showcase of Baroque masterpieces, anchored by the 17th-century Baroque-styles Palazzo Pamphilj and Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone. But the show-stoppers are undoubtedly the 3 splendid fountains, namely the Fountain of the Four Rivers, Fontana del Moro and Fountain of Neptune, which wow visitors with their stunning sculptural creations. No wonder this square is often regarded as the prettiest piazza in Rome!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 January 2024
- robnh61Stockport, United Kingdom2,432 contributionsFabulous squareThis is a fabulous picturesque square in the centre of this beautiful city. It is dominated by one of many obelisks to be found in the city. There are a number of restaurants and cafes in the square which, unfortunately, take advantage of tourists with their pricing. Much better to venture a short distance to find much more cost effective offeringsVisited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 February 2024
- ReplicatorBristol, United Kingdom422 contributionsDo the underground listening tour.We visited this a couple of times but by far the best was doing the underground tour which can be done just by walking into the booking office. You can see part of the history at one end and then the office is just around the corner where you use headsets to listen to the information and they walk you over to the other side of the old arena and you go underground there as well well worth it. Interesting.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024

The Piazza is particularly spectacular, offering a breathtaking sight. I recommend visiting during the day to fully appreciate their beauty, but don't miss the chance to return in the evenings for a completely different atmosphere and experience.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 March 2024

For me, now that I'm back home and can reflect back on my visit to Rome in the late summer of 2019, I wish I had stayed longer and seen more places in Rome. Let me begin this by saying, if you are born on this planet you have to visit Rome at least once before you die. It offers something totally different than other European big cities, like Paris and Amsterdam, like its pebbled roads, the sun kissed buildings and the famous Piazzas, delicious Mediterranean food, Italian music and the beautiful and hospitable people of Italy. I have found Rome to be much more laid back than Paris or Amsterdam, but I enjoyed it a ton. As I had visited in late August and early September, the weather was less hot and there was slight drizzles during the afternoons. I stayed in a hotel near Piazza Navona which was super cheap-My advice is to anyone to find accommodations near Central Rome, because it's easier and much more convenient to visit all the touristy places and public transportation is easily accessible, also it's cheap too if you know to look for the right places and search for in advance. I always visited Piazza Navona everyday during my stay and the place was bustling with tourists taking their memorable pictures with the fountains in the background, and there were many dinner places in the square. I didn't eat at any of them because of the high costs but I did get Gelato =D. I hope everyone visits Rome at least once, i cannot describe the beauty of Rome. You have to see it to enjoy it and once you are back home, you will miss it. I cannot wait to visit the eternal city again and see more of Rome next time.

The endless skill and artistry within the Cities Fountains and Squares is mind blowing and beholding.... truly wonderful... Piazza is quite spectacular to say the least... I recommend to see in day time but do make the effort to go back to them all in the evenings for a completely different viewing and feeling .

My wife and I were visiting Rome for the Valentines weekend. We did a lot of walking and were recommended to pay a visit here. As you emerge from the uninspiring side streets into this piazza the magnificence literally unfolds in front of you.
Quite a large area it has an interesting and large monument / fountain in the middle with two smaller fountains at either end providing a great visual experience. On one side is a very large church and restaurants hug all sides of the Piazza.
We liked it so much we visited three times over the weekend. We strongly recommend a visit if you are in Rome.

Recently visited Italy and enjoyed the piazzas so much. There were lovely outdoor cafes, beautiful fountains and even an extemporaneous amazing male singer singing "Time To Say Goodbye" in the courtyard. Just another beautiful place to sample the awesome place that Italy is.

We stayed at the Lifestyle Suites located in Piazza Navona for 7 days to celebrate my birthday. Centrally located between Vatican City and the Colosseum, we were able to simply take a short walk to each of these locations. It has wonderful restaurants, a beautiful view, St. Agnes church for mass... just a wonderful place overall. Highly recommended.

We loved this piazza, we spent some time in this square at one of the restaurants enjoying a beer and people watching and watching the world go by in the sunshine. Beautiful buildings and fountains (including one with Egyptian hieroglyphs) There were people playing guitars and music and it had a lovely vibe. Definitely recommend adding it to your sightseeing of Rome.

Piazza Navona is perhaps my favourite piazza in Rome. It’s always lively and fun – it has bars, restaurants, 3 marble fountains, a Baroque church, all in the one piazza.
The main things to see are:
i) The Fountain of 4 Rivers, the biggest Bernini fountain in the centre, with 4 muscular gods and a towering Egyptian obelisk.
ii) The Moor’s Fountain, a pretty rosy pink marble fountain. What amused us the most was that the large, central figure wrestling a dolphin. He looks ready to fling the unlucky dolphin through the air with great force at any minute. This is an excellent spot for a photo, looking right down Piazza Navona, capturing the curve of the surrounding buildings and the obelisk in the background.
iii) Neptune’s Fountain is a smaller but dramatic fountain. Neptune, has a spear raised theatrically above his head, about to strike down the octopus that is trying to suck him under the water.
iv) Church of St Agnes is in the middle and is a highly ornate Baroque church with a crypt. We saw a wonderful opera concert here (see separate review on Opera Emotion). Just be aware that the church closed on Mondays and for a chunk of time in the middle of the other days.
v) The first thing you will probably notice is the piazza’s unusual shape - a very long oval which is quite unlike other piazzas. This is because it was originally an athletics stadium built by the Emperor Domitianus in the 1st century. Once you find this out, you can recognise the shape immediately. It held 30,000 spectators and when fire damaged the Colosseum, they held gladiator shows here too.
Although there are a lot of places to eat and drink around the piazza, there are also a lot of little streets that run off it. Although we love to stroll through the piazza, we prefer to explore the backstreets for restaurants instead.

Piazza Navona was one of our stops during a golf cart tour of Rome with Serena, thanks to Eyes of Rome. We were amazed at the combination of statuary and architecture as well as a solo artist bringing beautiful music to a lovely day. This piazza is not as crowded as areas like the Spanish Steps and other attractions, perhaps the size of it gives ytou the impression that the crowds are smaller here.

Big town square. Massive fountain. Looks pretty but full of people selling dodgy good and tacky toys. Pay double the money for a drink on the square and watch all the tourists take selfies with a big fountain.

I was disappointed with the piazza this time, All the artist and street entertainers are gone!, You cant eat an ice cream or food around area, And stores and restaurants are much more expensive , than any area. Go one street over. But if you must have one meal there. Just for the sake of a picture ,I had A glass of wine and bussetta, (bread with tomatoes) bill was 14 euros. I left 15.

Does anyone know if I will be able to buy art souvenirs at the Piazza Navona during February?
Not sure if this will be an option due to the cold. I love buying art souvenirs and hope to buy some when I go in Feb 2020
Written 29 December 2019
Would imagine when it's cold the same as when it's very hot the street vendors will find shelter one way or another to peddle their goods. Not far from Piazza Navona across the river on the short walk to Castel Sant'Angelo is a collection of covered stalls which appear permanent and we've seen many artworks and other souvenirs available there during our visit.

Can anyone recommend a 4.5 - 5* hotel - preferably a largish hotel rather than small boutique type - walking distance to piazza navona, for 2adults week before X'mas. Also, we have couple of parties which finish 2am just off the piazza; safe to walk back to the hotel at that hour??

Does anyone know how much the street artists charge for a couple caricature please?
Written 20 May 2019
I have seen prices going anywhere from EUR15 to EUR70. The important part is to not pay the first asked price. They expect the negotiation, so they give you a high first quote. Always beware of scammers and keep your full attention on when in crowds.

How to go to Best Western plus hotel universo from Piazza navona..most convenient and cheap
Written 20 February 2019
Catch a bus back to your hotel.
Leave the Piazza by walking about 200 metres, turning:
Right onto the Corsica Agonale;
Right at the T intersection onto the Piazza Madama which then becomes the Corsica Adel Rinascimento;
The Rinascimento N7 Bus Stop is just before the intersection with Via De Canestrari;
Board the Linea 70 Urbana Bus for a 15 minute ride;
Get off the bus at Viminale (8 stops), just after the National Fountain ;
Walk about 300 metres, turning left into Via Del Viminali;
Then right into Via Principe Amedeo to your hotel.
Enjoy your visit.

We saw a video of a spray paint artist in one of the piazzas.
Is there a specific place to see them?
Are they common or rare in Rome?

They are common in Rome. You can find them at Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Piazza d'Espagna, beside Corso street and msny other spots.
