A grand 16th century palazzo, now the official residence of the Prime Minister of the Italian Republic. The well-known architects Giacomo della Porta and Carlo Maderno designed the building. The palazzo sits on the lovely Piazza Colonna, with a perfect view of the Column of Marcus Aurelius. Hope to be able to see the inside some day.

Another lovely monument in the piazza which is worth a look if you are walking that way. A quick stop for a photo and a rest.

This unassuming building is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Italy. The building forms the northern boundry of Piazza Colonna. Directly outside the front door is the Colonna di Marco Aurelio.
The building dates from the mid 1500’s, and houses 5 floors. In 1961 it became the meeting place for the Council of Ministers.

On Piazza Colonna you can see attractions from the obligatory list; this is a beige building standing on the corner of Via del Corso - Palazzo Chigi (Chigi Palace), where Italian prime ministers live and meet (if you’re lucky, there’s a chance to see the current head of government at arm’s length hands, since it is not customary in Italy to drive the public to the other end of the street), Colonna di Marco Aurelio (late 2nd century), Chiesa di San Bartolomeo e di Sant'Alessandro da Bergamo and Galleria Alberto Sordi.

First of all, I would like to underline once again the effort of official Italian institutions aimed at allowing their fellow citizens and incidentally citizens from elsewhere (like us!) to access the seats of all political bodies, i.e. This is how we visited practically everything from the Quirinal Palace to the Montecitorio Palace (Chamber of Deputies), from the Consiglio di Stato to the Ghigi Palace (Presidency of the Government)!!! Well done!!!
What a difference with other countries like France where the king was guillotined to take his place and continue to act like him (if not more haughtily) by keeping the people away from the palaces of power!! !
This is a so-called institutional visit and therefore also has an educational aim.
Thank you also for the kind, natural, civil, simply human welcome!!!
The only criticism is that we barely see more than ten places in less than an hour.
On the other hand, we come away very aware of the progress of a council of ministers, their responsibilities, the progress of official visits or transfers of power, etc.
The places are very beautiful, as it was once the Ministry of Colonies, the first room exhibits an extraordinary frieze of sculpted female heads representing the main ethnic groups of the world.
The most important room is where the councils of ministers are held with its round table so that the head of government does not occupy a privileged position (primus inter pares) in relation to the other ministers and only a slightly higher seat indicates its place.
As we pass by, we see beautiful ceilings, beautiful tapestries, some finely crafted furniture....
The visit is free and in Italian of course.
