Any charms that Piazza di Piscinula might have are lost because the square functions more or less as a giant carpark. It’s crowded with haphazardly parked cars.
If you can overlook this, you might notice that it also has several medieval buildings, most notably the House of Mattei.
This is just one of the many properties belonging to the Mattei dynasty. They were one of Rome’s most powerful noble families, from the Middle Ages and for several centuries on. Holding high positions in the papal curia and in government, they also held a lot of sway. We only recognised the name because earlier, we’d walked through Piazza Mattei in the Jewish Quarter and stopped to admire the charming Turtle Fountain.
Crossing over to Tiber Island, we also passed the island’s distinctive tower-like palazzo which once belonged to the family. It seemed like the Mattei were everywhere around here.
If like us, you are coming from Tiber Island, then Piazza di Piscinula is the first piazza you arrive at in Trastevere. We didn’t linger here. Instead we continued walking down via del Piscinula, which runs off the square. Here you will find all the charm that is missing from the piazza. It's a very picturesque street, with ivy draping down the sides of buildings and several ‘Madonnelle’ watching over passers-by.

This is the first plaza you come to upon entry to Trastevere after crossing the bridge from Isola Tiberina. It is full of small Medieval palazzos and churches.
