One of the interesting things to see at Area Sacra di Largo Argentina is the Little Pope Tower (Torre del Papito) in the SE corner of the excavation grounds. This is a medieval period tower that many believe is named after after Anacletus II Pierleoni (1132-38), who was nicknamed Papetto. The tower is three stories and attached to a short portico which also dates back to the Middle Ages. Seems it is not open to the public but definitely worth a quick look-see if you intend to pass by and see the Area Sacra di Largo Argentina grounds.

The medieval “little pope’s tower” stands off to one side of Largo Argentina. You cannot go inside. Worth looking at for a bit if you are visiting Largo Argentina.

This tower is located at one corner of Largo di Torre Argentina. This tower is not the one that gave name to this area. This is a medieval tower was erected in the early 1300’s. It is not clear where the name Papito originated, however there are a couple theories

This actually looks like a lonely out of place tower as it is on the edge of roman ruins, standing all by its self. There were once building leaning against the tower, however, in 1941 they were demolished. Restoration has been undertaken to bring it back to its original appearance. Probably not a stand alone attraction, however, worth a visit combined with the ruins and the cat sanctuary.

Worth a quick walk to. Some great ruins that appear to have been taken over by stray cats. Take 10 minutes out to see how many you can spot! Take an ice cream with you so you don't rush.

This brick tower with a quadrangular base, just over 19 meters high, is one of the rare medieval buildings that has survived intact to the present day and has fortunately also survived the demolitions carried out in the area during the last century. The term “Papito” probably derives from a distortion of the surname of the owners of the tower in the 14th century, the Papareschi.
Today, under the side of the tower that overlooks via di S. Nicola de' Cesarini, there is a small portico, commissioned by Antonio Muñoz in the early twentieth century, for the construction of which the columns from a building demolished in the close.
It is only accessible with rare guided tours but you can always enter on the ground floor because it is home to the ticket office for entry to the nearby Sacred Area.
