The magnificent House of the Faun is located on the Via della Fortuna and it was the only private house that we visited. It is large, one of the largest in Pompeii and occupies the whole block (Insula) 12 of the Regio VI, a whole 3000 square meters! It was built in the II. century BC.

We found the main entrance elegant and robust at the same time. Behind the entrance is the lobby (vestibulum) with a copy of a decorative and delicate bronze statue, the dancing Faun. It is in an impluvium, a shallow basin for catching rainwater with a nice, geometrical mosaic, actually an Opus sectile. The original of the statue is in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

A second ornamental, geometrical Opus sectile is on the floor a room behind the first atrium. It is made of thin rhombi in three shades, tiled in a hexagonal pattern, creating an effect of 3D cubes, a design very popular in XX. century op-art.

Behind that room is the first atrium. a little garden, surrounded by a collonaded porch (a peristyle).

We then arrived at the beautiful copy of the famous Alexander Mosaic, on the floor of a room behind the first atrium. The original, also in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, was created around 120 BC and depicts the victory of Alexander the Great over Darius III of Persia in the Battle of Issus in 333 BC.

Behind the room with the Alexander Mosaic is second, larger atrium with a garden and a peristyle. We did not go there, instead, we visited the many rooms of this magnificent house.

Even though most of the original artwork and sculptures have been relocated to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, the House of the Faun is still stunning.
You are welcomed into the house with the Latin greeting 'HAVE' in mosaic on the floor at the entrance. The replica statue of the dancing faun after whom the house is named stands on a lovely mosaic in the impluvium in the atrium. The other amazing mosaic, sadly only a replica (but do go and see the original in Naples) is of the Battle of Issus between Alexander the Great and Darius of Persia.

This is one of the best known and largest houses in Pompeii that you can visit. It is known for this tiny little statue of the faun. There are some well preserved walls and floors in this house and helps to understand how a wealthier family lived in Pompeii.

The House of the Faun is one of the most famous houses in Pompei and was luckily open when we visited (Houses are frequently closed including when we were there The House of the Tragic Poet although you can still see the famous 'Cave Canem' mosaic at its entrance). An extensive site it is best known for its famous miniature faun statue and its Alexander The Great mosaic but note both of these are replicas. The originals are in the museum in Naples. I love the mosaic at the entrance spelling out the single word 'Have', a variant of the Roman 'Ave' meaning greeting (see photo).

Whoever lived here must presumably have been one of the most wealthy inhabitants judging from its size and grandeur. There are many must sees in Pompei but make sure you visit this one if it is open.

You will see a copy of the statue as the real one is in the Naples Museum. This house is large and grand with fantastic mosaics (the original Alexander the Great mosaic is in the Naples museum). The copy is not very accurate, laid on the ground, there is not the attention to detail and they've used all the same sized stones, whereas the original has around 4 million pieces of tesserae in all different sizes, it's an absolute masterpiece. There are so many details to this area, it's worth investing in a good guide or having a private tour !

The statue here looked as though it should be in a museum. Truth be told, though, besides the statue and the impluvium where it stands, there isn't anything else to see at Casa del Fauno (House of the Faun). Our tour guide told us to be sure and not miss it. I enjoyed seeing it, but truth be told, I would not have returned home saddened had I missed it as there is so much that is far better to see while at Pompeii and if you are only there on a day tour, you will not be able to catch it all, particularly if you are like me and want to take photos of every cool thing you see! Hindsight is 20/20, but if I had a do-over, I would have gone to Pompei for two days to see all of the ruins there, and taken an extra day to climb Mount Vesuvius, which you will pass on your way to Pompei.

It was closed, like so much in Pompeii and Herculaneum. They have to conserve, but feel they should warn you before you buy a ticket - or reduce the price a little. Otherwise - Herculaneum is easier, and more intact. Really gives the feel of how the romans lived - all classes, too...

Great to see the house, even better to link it with the artefacts in the Archaeological museum. Just wish I could have seen the artefacts in the house when it was first uncovered!

The House of the Faun is located somewhat central in Pompeii not far from the forum, and is clearly the home of a once wealthy local. The mosaic showing the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius is stunning, albeit the original is in the museum in Naples. The statue of the faun, in the main atrium, is smaller than you would imagine but fantastic none the less.

This is a must visit site when in Pompeii.
