Let's face it, you visit this site because you want to see the "mystery" fresco. As it stands, you can only see two walls of it, because you view it from an entrance in the third wall. There's no way the guides will let you access the entrance where you can see the whole thing. Enormously disappointing.

Other than that, it's fantastic as expected.

Pompei Scavi is the small train station one stops at to visit the famous ruins of the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Its just a walk across the road so conveniently located for public transportation.

Pompei Scavi station has only two tracks with platform 1 serving trains to Sorrento while platform 2 serving trains to Naples.

The trip to Pompeii from Naples takes just over 30 mins.

This villa outside the city which directly overlooks the sea is truly interesting. The fresco that also gives its name to the villa is beautiful and very well preserved. I was also struck by the plaster casts of a door and a large window.

It's quite a walk to this villa from the rest of Pompeii. On the way there you pass a few tombs which line the roads which were interesting. The villa has well preserved frescos.

I don't think it's worthwhile walking all the way to this villa if you've already seen the other excavations. There is an exit from Pompeii here but then it's a walk back to the train station (Pompei Scavi Villa Dei Misteri). The detour to this villa took around an hour.

This is one of the best preserved homes in Pompeii. To enter, walk along the path INSIDE the park. Do not exit the park and walk along the road to get in. Although much faster, you soon realize that there is no entrance here. We had to enlist the help of a souvenir stand owner for placed a call to let us in. Don't count on this option. You can however exit into the street from the Villa of Mysteries, and the way back to the train station is a much easier to walk through the exit rather than the tough paths within the park. The Villa does have restrooms for your convenience. The frescoes within the villa are first rate and well worth seeing. It is a bit of a walk from the main sites in Pompeii, but if you plan as the last thing for the day, it mitigates any further walking within the park itself.

Although it was very hot, the place is roofed making it more bearable. If you have REDUCED MOBILITY or a DISABILITY, although it will not cost you anything to enter, or a companion, access is impossible because it has a long staircase in full sun. The ruins are beautiful and the staff who attend to it too. Uncrowded place and difficult parking.

It was a long walk to Villa dei Misteri (after a morning visiting many other meaningful sites). On the way there I visited the domus of Dionysius, a must but not publicised sufficiently. The Villa is being refurbished but the main room could still be viewed.

In the current Covid-19 one way system, you can absolutely explore Pompeii beyond the set route, especially in the direction of the Amphitheatre, but we failed to find an open route to the Villa dei Misteri. We tried multiple ways, but everything was blocked off.

For those interested, unfortunately we also could not enter the House of the Vettii. We were able to walk up to it and peek at the entrance way (worth it!). The floor was covered and we could see workers inside, so this may have been ordinary scheduled archaeological work, and may have been nothing to do with Covid. It may be temporary, but I was disappointed to not see the Cinnabar.

A 20 minutes walk from the core of Pompei, this complex houses a stunning collection of frescoes still in their places (while many other Pompei frescoes have been translated to the archaeological museum). What can be seen is simply splendid and I hope that in the future visitors will have access to more araeas. An incredible visit.Entrance is included in the general ticket for the site of Pompei. Dirty cheap for what can be seen and visited and so expensive to protect.
