Many Roman Vila's on the main Via had stores attached. The Laundry used urine to help clean clothes. I didn't realize the Roman's were very commerce minded and how they used their homes to make money

This ancient laundry and dry cleaner's is the classic example of how to use a home for commercial purposes.
Along the path of via dell'abbondanza is the "fullonica" of Stefanus. The well-preserved house can be seen in the central basin where clothes were washed using urine which contains a large percentage of ammonia, the house can be visited completelyThe ancient Pompeians were great at exploiting every corner of their homes to start a business.
The frescoes on the walls are also noteworthy

Because the draped costume of the Romans required a lot of material, the cloth making and laundering industries flourished in Pompeii. This house is considered to be an example of a dwelling converted into a workshop where fabrics were finished in the fullonicae. The fullones cleaned the fabric by trampling them with their feet in huge vats filled with water and urine. There are examples of the vats but thankfully no samples of the cleaning solutions!

We had a book from our hotel on how to visit the ruins. It explained about how they used urine to wash the clothing so it was interesting to see the area and imagine the slaves stomping on urine soaked clothes. Oh my!

Makes me smile that I’m actually reviewing a laundry , but what a laundry it is. Perfectly preserved, colourful, and a real sense of living history. In many ways it s the every day things you see at Pompeii that make it special, and even more so than the fancy villas and mosaics. Easy to imagine the people (or more likely slaves) doing their washing, and that’s what I like about it.

You might not think that you want to see an old laundry but the superb part of Pompeii is that you do get to see these buildings along with shops, inns and small houses along with the grand buildings.

You are unlikely to miss this as it is on the main street in sector 1

There was a number of laundries (fullonicae) in Pompeii. This fact is well-documented. The Fullonica of Stephanus is the only one which wasn't built as a fullonica but originally was a private house rebuilt later to form a laundry. This explains the presence of rich wall decorations in some of its rooms as well as the layout of a private house rather than a laundry. Furthermore, scholars still debate whether it was an industrial facility used for softening and dyeing in wool and fabric manufacturing or an equivalent of the present day laundromat serving general population.

As a side note, a bunch of photos for this attraction are attributed to it incorrectly as they show the painted lararium from the nearby Thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus.

Each of the sights at Pompeii are so special from the perspective of preserving history of everyday life in the ancient city. The Fullonica Di Stephanus is a laundry shop, which just by itself is notable. Has washing basins & vats present in a very organized manner. Fascinating. ...
