We took the train from Porta Nolana and found it just fine. It's not luxury travel but it's pretty similar to any other metro/subway style rail system. We got seats both ways to and from Pompeii. It was a cold, rainy day so the heating...More

Pretty dirty trains, seat numbers mean nothing, first there gets a seat! OK if going from Sorrento as it's a terminus but not so good if you are getting on at Herculaneum! Expect to stand & look after your valuables!

We were there in October when it wasn't too hot, so the lack of air conditioning wasn't a problem. On one occasion the train left about 15 minutes late. We had no trouble at all with anyone on board. It looked as if it could...More

A milk run from Naples to Sorrento at best. Way overly crowded. My wallet was stolen within the first two stops. It is a body to body experience, full of nasty, smelly people who shove you around like a leaf in the wind. There is...More

We travelled between Ercolano/Pompeii/Sorrento a number of times during our 5 day stay, myself, my husband and my 14 year old daughter. I was aprehensive due to other comments but as one reviewer said if you have been on the London Underground then this won't...More

I took the train in Naples, garibaldi station. Nothing strange in this old but good working train, until I realized that I suffer a pickpocket, probably in the station when buying the ticket. Very bad experience since I lost my documents and credit cards. I...More

I have noticed how many negative comments there are on this rail journey. Well, yes it's old, ( over 130 years.) Some of the rolling stock leaves you a bit sweaty but it was 38 degrees centigrade when we were on it. We used it...More

We bought RETURN tickets to take out family from Naples to Pompeii Scavi. 2.20 euro each, each way. The train was empty on the way out... With few tourists, but it was 8.30am. The views of Mount Vesuvius as you travel along the heavily graffitied...More

We used this service twice from Sorrento to Ercolana and Pompei with no troubles. If you are familiar with London Underground trains, this will be very easy. The trains look very scruffy, full of graffiti (on the outside) as are the stations. We bought tickets...More

Trains ran to time, cheap tickets and yes there was a lot of standing but the service and approach was better than some trains here in the UK. The Circumvesuviana provided easy transport around the areas we wanted to visit. We never felt threatened or...More

I very much appreciated your recent review of the Circumvesuviana train. Like you, we have heard and read the horror stories of filthy conditions and rampant pickpockets, so it was nice to see a review which dispelled much of those fears. We are traveling from Naples to Sorrnto in October and plan to take the Circumvesuviana with our luggage. Once in Sorrento, we plan to use the train again (without luggage) to make a day trip back to Naples to visit the archaeological museum there, and on another day to go to and from Pompeii. I am wondering if you happened to visit the Naples museum and whether or not you used the Naples city Metro to go to and from. If so, can you share what that journey was like? Also, do you know of anyone who boarded the Circumvesuviana train at Porta Nolana rather than at Garibaldi? We are pondering a walk to Porta Nolana in order to improve our chances of getting seats on the train, but the neighborhood around Porta Nolana appears dodgy and unsafe, at least judging from the picture we see on Google Maps. Thanks for any information you can share! Bill McLoughlin in Columbus, Ohio, USA

We haven't used the Porta Nolana station. I'd be surprised if it's any worse than the underground at Napoli Centrale, however. We haven't been to the museum or taken the metro. I didn't even know they had a metro! :) The... More
