Used this train to get to Sorrento. It really wasn’t that bad, you just need to have your wits about you and expect to not be travelling in style. For the price is was sufficient and manageable. The train has over 20 stops to Sorrento which...More

Having read all these reviews I was really terrified for what I would live in this train. But no. I took the train today by my own and went to Pompei. Ok the train was old with no air condition and a full of tourists...More

We had heard all the warnings about this train, but since I’ve travelled in many parts of the world over many years, I thought I knew how to protect myself. I was wrong. Bought our ticket in thes Naples train station upstairs and only later...More

I travelled a lot on these trains about 12 years ago and recent reviews raised concerns for me for my forthcoming holiday to the area. These turned out to be unfounded. Yes it was very hot, crowded at times and ran according to its own...More

It may not be luxurious, on time or clean but it is cheap and affords stunning views of Vesuvius. It can get very crowded with lots of people with large suitcases and can get very hot and sticky, but it takes you to the places...More

This is a private railway system, separate from Trenitalia. It's a good cheap way to get from to/from Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum etc. All the way from Naples to Sorrento costs only €3.90 each way. Yes some of the trains are a bit careworn but...More

If you travel for experience the train from Naples to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento will certainly give you that. Our mistake was not to read the Tripadvisor reviews more carefully. It is essential to get on the train at the terminus, Porta Nolana. It is...More

It was very stressful at the beginning, we couldn’t get on the first train to Sorrento because it was very full and no one would let us on. We felt very unsafe at the train station, and we had no idea what was going on....More

I very much appreciated your recent review of the Circumvesuviana train. Like you, we have heard and read the horror stories of filthy conditions and rampant pickpockets, so it was nice to see a review which dispelled much of those fears. We are traveling from Naples to Sorrnto in October and plan to take the Circumvesuviana with our luggage. Once in Sorrento, we plan to use the train again (without luggage) to make a day trip back to Naples to visit the archaeological museum there, and on another day to go to and from Pompeii. I am wondering if you happened to visit the Naples museum and whether or not you used the Naples city Metro to go to and from. If so, can you share what that journey was like? Also, do you know of anyone who boarded the Circumvesuviana train at Porta Nolana rather than at Garibaldi? We are pondering a walk to Porta Nolana in order to improve our chances of getting seats on the train, but the neighborhood around Porta Nolana appears dodgy and unsafe, at least judging from the picture we see on Google Maps. Thanks for any information you can share! Bill McLoughlin in Columbus, Ohio, USA

We haven't used the Porta Nolana station. I'd be surprised if it's any worse than the underground at Napoli Centrale, however. We haven't been to the museum or taken the metro. I didn't even know they had a metro! :) The... More
