Although I consider it a monument, it is officially an obelisk. It is the last of three great obelisks in the City, having been erected in the eighteenth century after that of San Gennaro and San Domenico. It dates to between 1747/1750 and replaced an...More

This is a big tall pointy statue thing. It’s right outside the church. It’s fine. It’s apparently dedicated to surviving the plague. It’s nice enough. Only takes a couple seconds to look at.

The obelisk, dedicated to the immaculate conception of the virgin Mary, was erected in the Piazza del gesù Nuovo, on the initiative of the Jesuits. As I understand it, to strengthen the faith so contrary to common sense event. Practical Jesuits used for the obelisk,...More

This Spire to the Immaculate Virgin is situated in the Piazza of Gesù Nuovo. Apparently in about 1750, Charles 111 decided that it would be good for the people to be able to admire the figure without the need to go into the nearby church....More

The Obelisco dell'Immacolata is a rather construction in the Piazza del Gesu Nuovo, outside the church of the same name. The piazza itself is nice enough. The obelisk was apparently erected sometime in the 18th century. It has a bit of history around it too.

A huge statue/monument in Naples, in fact one of the biggest I have ever seen. It is based in a large piazza in a very busy area - you cannot miss it. When we attended there was an outdoor concert taking place which gave the...More

This 98-foot, slender obelisk signaled our arrival at Piazza del Gesu Nuovo, where we started our walk down a major pedestrian street that cuts through Naples' historic center. The mid-18th-century masterpiece stands in the center of the square, attracting much attention because of its ornate...More

The design is almost startling for its heavy ornate elements, but the underlying true Obelisk shape come through as you gaze at the massive stone carving. Prominently placed in the Piazza de Gesu Nuvona, it becomes a pleasant landmark as you get to know the...More
