If you like hiking, this should be your second priority on the island. It's not an easy walk - quite steep at points and the final path can be extremely slippery - but well worth it if you like that sort of thing.
At the start of 2024, a small museum (which wasn't mentioned anywhere I looked) has opened in the old hermitage, providing a glimpse at the life of a 15th century hermit.

Take a bus to Fontana.
It's about 45 mins to 1 hour to walk up. (I'm not young or fit so if I can do it...) Follow the signs.
It's only 3.5 km but it is up all the way. About a 250-300m climb.
Some shade and three restaurants on the way!
Amazing views (obviously) from the top. Great food in the restaurant at the top.

3km walk (a bit steep at times). Nice views at the top. You can do have of the route by car. There is a little restaurant/ cafe half way to the top. We walked from Fortuna (accessible by bus from Porto or Forio). There is also a path from Forio if you don't want to take the same route down.

Average level of fitness needed. Plenty 0f water and good shoes.
Here is how we planned our trip. It was amazing and would do it over and over again.
From the Ischia port about 1 minutes walk is the bus station. We bought day trip tickets for 4.50 euros pp.
Of the many buses you can take CD buses go clockwise and CS buses go anticlockwise. We took the CD bus to Fontana stop. It took about 40 mins on the bus. The Fontana bus stop is right outside a church. Its hard to miss since there is a dazzling white stone massive statue of Jesus.
To start the hike we followed the road. Left from the church or with the statue to your back its the road straight ahead. Past the two small shops. A few meters down the road there are signs on the wall. Up ahead is the extremely steep begining of the hike. From here for about 1.5 km the roads are pretty wide and paved. Its quiet with a few vespas and cars driving through. After a while you will get to a bend where on your right is a small car park. On the right is a small restaurant and next to it the path further up. After this point onwards its not possible to drive. It is also not recommended for small children. As you walk further up the road gets narrow and fastly becomes a dirt road. The further you go the narrower the path gets. The terrain gets uneven and you really have to watch your footing. At the top there is a restaurant where you can drink and eat. At the side of the restaurant is a small rocky, steep slop. If you climb that then in a few minutes you will be at the extreme peak of the mountaint. There is a flagpole there. Be very very careful at the peak cliffs as it’s extremely dangerous if you miss your footing. Enjoy your hard earned beautiful breathtaking view.
Climb down is less time consuming at ascending.

We hiked three mountains while in the Naples area including Mt. Vesuvious, Positano and the walk of the gods, and Mt. Epomeo. Our favorite and most rewarding by far was Mt. Epomeo! The feeling you got when you finally reached the top was exciting. Not only for the views, but just for the hike and the camaraderie along the way. The hike is a little strenuous, but if you are n pretty good shape, it is a good workout!

The highlight of our trip. We climed in the daytime and it was so amazing we repeated the following morning to see sun rise over the island. It took is 35 minutes to climb on both occasions from Fontana and it is very well signposted. It is a must if you visit the island.

We caught the local bus from Forio and then walked the 3kms to the top of the mountain. You need decent footwear as it is both steep, narrow and often without anything to hold on to. Most of the walk is in the shade of trees with scents of herbs. There are lovely wild flowers everywhere full of bees and butterflies. The walk winds its way upwards and in the heat of a summers day, is quite a tough walk. In places the path is tiny but always easy to follow. There are lovely views on the way up. The top is very steep, rocky and with no hand holds- you need to have good balance! It is well worth the climb as from the top you can see in every direction, the whole island. Absolutely stunning. There is a brilliant cafe near the top. It has good food which can be eaten either inside or in the garden. The loo is most welcome too! This walk was the highlight of my holiday.

Me and my partner done this hike during our holiday in ischia, we got the bus CS to serrara Fontana and got off by the church with the statue to Jesus outside in the square!! And started our ascent to the top, if you look across the road you will see a alley way that I signposted saying mount epomeo 3k. This is where we started our hike, it is well signposted from that time on. The start of the hike is very steep and all on roads but as you start getting nearer the top it is very gentle hike, before you start climbing up the mountain trails you will see a lovely restaurant with a nice lady that will tell you what way to go from there. She also does the best bruschetta I have ever tasted and fresh orange/lemon juice! Right by this place you will see the horse tour place they have free sticks for you to use to help you up, just make sure you give them back at the end 😀 it's a great hike from here you will see amazing views and an old church half way up where u can sit and just enjoy the views!! As you get to the summit it is a great feeling as you can see the whole island and on a nice day over to Capri, I would defiantly say to do this its a amazing but quite slippery so make sure to wear trainers and take water.

We took the bus around to Fontana and walked from there. I was quite surprised that the walk was not as hard as I had anticipated. It took me about 50 minutes to the top. The start of the walk and in fact about 3/4 of the way is more or less just a steep narrow road with a few cars and motorbikes passing by. You will also pass 4 restaurants so plenty of opportunity to rest and get water. Some people got lifts this far. After the restaurant La Porta di Agartha (very strongly recommended) the road narrows to a track, so narrow that you have to stand aside to allow others to pass going the other way. At some points you are walking up a narrow passage gouged into the tufo. There is a bit of a scramble at one point, I did keep stopping, but it's the steepness that got my breath a bit - my friend waited at Agartha but he is 71 and not good with uneven ground. Luckily someone advised me as I was walking, once you arrive at the restaurant at the very top, go through the door to the back, turn right and go out of the door on the right and you come to a view point. Go the other way and you get to the real top - I didn't do that as I suffer from vertigo and I had superb, clear enough views from where I was.
This is a great walk best done when not too hot and earlier or later in the day when cooler. There is some intermittent shade when walking.
Plenty of room in the restaurants in October.
I was wearing a skirt and walking sandals, but I saw people at the top in sling backs, shorts - and also two young children skipping up, really if taken slowly and steadily, anyone could do this. Coming down is actually marginally worse as there is more danger of slipping, there are a lot of leaves on the paths.
I absolutely loved it.

With my roots in Ischia,I try to enjoy the highlights of each area..Mt Epomeo was one highlight I wish to forget..Every report mentioned "Average Fitness"..I guess I am delusional as to my fitness.. From the parking lot at the base of the mountain,we walked about 2 hours with no end in sight. She found a rock to sit on and stayed there, while I continued upward to the restaurant...still not close enough to the summit...Enjoyed the view but not worth the pain... we are in our late 60's and do a good amount of walking..but Mountain climbing is another beast...My main problem was with all of the reviews for people of "Average Fitness"..We learned that we are far below average...An hour at the Thermal Spa at the Hotels helped tremendously

Hi I walk with the aid of a staff, have had a knee replacement and waiting for the other to be done. Is there an easy route to take or should I avoid the visit to Monte Epomeo. ?

One of the sources implies there are mules to take you to the top. I am mobility impaired and couldn't walk it. Is there any way for me? It sounds fabulous.

Il sentiero più agevole inizia da Serrara Fontana, facilmente raggiungibile con gli autobus delle linee circolari (oraria e antioraria). Ci sono altri sentieri, ma poco segnati e abbastanza impegnativi dato il dislivello.
