The route took all day. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The route is not suitable for beginners! It is better to start early in the morning when it is not so hot. If you have high blood pressure, refrain from the route. The views are beautiful and very picturesque as a bonus for all the torment of climbing).

Views from the Torre are great! Take the 1,000 steps up towards Potone starting up the stairs right across from the Museo Cartiere (you will see a red circle on the wall below all the tiles for the B &Bs) and then go up and up and then take a right up another set of stairs almost at the top of the hill ( you will see a sign there that points one direction for Amalfi and one direction for “the Centro”. You will hike another 20
minutes up to the tower with a very sharp left turn (almost a U turn) right after you come to the colored tiles which are very oddly placed along the path. Ask people along the way. U will huff and puff but it will be worth it! Bring a picnic!

We walked down from Ravello to the Torri dello Ziro and then down to Amalfi. It was definitely quite a few steps down, and the path wasn't always clear at times, but the view from the tower was worth the effort. As you approach the tower, it's also interesting to look down on Atrani and see how deeply it's s nestled into the valley between the hills.
Regarding the route, we took a footpath near the Chiesa di Santa Maria a Gradillo that was signposted for Amalfi (it's marked in Google Satellite view) and runs down to the SS373. From there you follow this road down, at times on the road itself and sometimes on adjacent footpaths, until you reach a business that's marked on maps as a used car dealership. There you leave the SS373 and go west toward Pontone. Midway through Pontone follow the signage for the footpath to Torro Dello Ziro. After a bit you'll pass something that looks like a bunker. Just after that, take the left fork instead of continuing into the woods. This path leads out to the castle ruins. To continue into Amalfi, backtrack to Pontone, continue along the road for a bit, and take the path that is signed for Amalfi.
The walk and seeing the ruins took about half an afternoon. Bring plenty of water and definitely your camera. It's all downhill so you don't need a high level of fitness, but it isn't particularly kind on the knees.

Like all walks in the area, you must be prepared to walk up and down hundreds of steps. We took the bus from Amalfi up to Ravello , from there we walked down and up to Scala to Minuta , down to Pontone and from there, to the Torre dello Ziro. The signposting was Ok. Walking back down to Amalfi means returning almost to Pontone and turning downhill with probably 1000 stairs. Take plenty of water. The views overlooking Atrani and Amalfi are incredible and well worth it. A nice but exhausting day ( we are both 60 plus with hiking poles)

This is a beautiful walk off the tourist trail. We walked up from Amalfi town to Pontone (via A LOT of stairs), skirting beside Pontone on to the Torre Dello Ziro castle ruins and then down to Atrani.
The route is not that well signposted from Amalfi. You will need to head through the main drag towards the top of the town before heading along a parallel street to the righthand side and up the staircase to Pontone. Once you make it to Pontone there are signs for the Torre Dello Ziro and down to Atrani. Once you have made it to the Torre Dello Ziro castle ruins you will be rewarded with some fantastic views over Amalfi and Atrani.
Make sure to take plenty of water and snacks with you (we took lunch with us). I would also only recommend this walk if you are fit and able. We would consider ourselves fit and we found the route challenging at times. However, it was a brilliant day out where you can experience authentic Italian landscapes away from the tourist trail.

Climbed up to here from Amalfi via the Valle Dei Mulini, so I was a bit fatigued and dehydrating despite carrying umpteen bottles of water. I see tour buses and believe Sita Bus goes here so if you're not fit that's an option. I didn't have maps, just some notes in a guide book, so exploring was quite daunting being already tired, but glad I persevered and found the ruins. Simply stunning views across to Ravello and down into both Atrani and Amalfi. The tower and ruins are very photogenic and offer uninterrupted vistas of Atrani and Amalfi for photos and just simply drinking in the beauty of the place. I also climbed above the tower to a belvedere with some more modern remains, without research I don't know what, possibly WWII remains? Higher again are more ruins, but again I had no real information - had I not been so tired and thirsty I might have had the foresight to discover more in the village of Pontone before approaching. These final ruins at the very apex of the sight appear rather overgrown and there are signs that someone is intentionally clearing the undergrowth so better views might be afforded to later visitors. In all, a great site to explore and you could spend a good while here.

We had a small booklet 'Walking on the Amalfi Coast' from Cicerone with some 32 walks (also on Ischia and Capri) and walk 26 describes the 1.5 hour walk to and from the Torre dello Ziro.
It is a wonderful walk with fantisch views starting in Pontone (Commune della Scala).
A relatively easy walk.

We walked from Scala (elevation 360m) to Atrani (sea level) along La Torre dello Ziro trail. This is a great walk through beautiful villages (Scala, Minuta, Pontone) and amazing panoramic views of Atrani, Amalifi and the Mediterranean Sea. We caught the bus from Amalfi to Ravello, getting of near Scala. We walked 1km up to Scala and started the walk. From Pontone we walk to a headland lookout and then had to back track to get the the Torre dello Ziro (coastal watch tower) trail. It was originally built in 12c to guard against Saracan pirates. It was rebuilt in 1480 by the Duke of Amalfi (his wife and two sons were imprisoned in the tower and then murdered, locals think tower is haunted). We climbed to the top of the tower for more spectacular views. We then had to back track to Pontone to get the trail down to Atrani. All up it must have been around a 8 km walk and 1500 steps but a must to do.

Ran up to the torre a couple of times as part of my morning runs. The path up is nice and easily done with stunning views at the end.. went up from atrani and amalfi routes. Nice way to start the day.

Enjoyed the trek to the ruin but was surprised by how many seps it took to get down to Amalfi. If we had known would have gone back to town for a bus down. Someone said 1400 steps, for sure it was a 1000. The hiking around to get there was great. We went from Ravello.

Vorrei sapere come arrivare fino alla torre partendo da Atrani, spiegandomi tutto l'itinerario. Grazie in anticipo.
Written 18 April 2019

Is the Belvedere located before the Torre dello Ziro ruins? we're going from Amalfi, is there any signage posted before reaching Pontone? How long is it from the Fore Porta lemon cafe to the Torre dello Ziro ruins?

How do I get there using public transportation?
Written 20 March 2016
The closest town is Amalfi. You can take the bus or ferry there and then walk up to the castle ruins. Or you can take the bus to Ravello (it's on top of the hills, so no ferry harbor) and do the longer but downhill walk from there). The amount of time it would take to do either walk will depend on your level of fitness.
