This large Baroque church in Sasso Barisano was formerly a monastery. It is imposing from the outside, but the interior is relatively modest, lacking the usual Baroque embellishments.
The fifteenth century rock church of San Guglielmo is located under the current church and can be visited for a fee.
From the terrace you have views of the Sassi.

We have visited this Baroque church in the northern part of Sasso Barisano, a national monument of Italy, during our walk in Sassi di Matera.
The view of the Sassi di Matera and the surrounding rock formations is very nice from the plateau in front of the former monastery, so we spent a few minutes admiring it before entering the church.
On the main facade there are four sculptures, one of them representing Saint Augustine. The interior is bright, very well lit, painted white with some grey elements. There is a large dome above the crossing, the choir with the organ is above the main altar. The chapels with the side altars - three on the northern and three on the southern side of the nave - have Baroque altarpieces. The baptismal font in the southwest corner is very interesting.
Unfortunately we did not notice the door in the northeastern part of the church leading to the older rock church under the monastery and the church.

The baroque church, formerly a monastery, is impressive in itself and is certainly worth a visit. However, for an extra €1 you can visit what they call the crypt, but it is actually the remaining part of an old rupestrian (carved out of rock) church dated from about 1600. This is something really worth seeing with the old paintings on the walls - it looks much older than 1600 and has a strange atmosphere, being hidden underneath the "modern" church above it.

Matera is a beautiful place and that's why it's World Heritage listed. There are many beautiful Churches and many very good restaurants. This Church is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. I believe it's actually a Convent.

Situated in the northern panoramic end of the Sassi district. Beneath this structure the original settlement can be found, with the rock cut-out rooms. From here it’s a walk back to the rest of Matera, i died in June heat

As other travellers have said, the visit to this church is interesting for several reasons: the exquisite panorama to be enjoyed from it, the stone-hewn church (with free access) and also a collection of stone elements displayed. The church itself has some interesting works of art.

This former monastery church of the Augustinian friars has been beautifully restored. At the side of the High Altar you can pay to visit the rupestrian church attached. This is interesting, but for me the most evocative of these churches was the little Santa Maria de Idris. Matera should not be missed. It is the most beautiful and interesting town in Basilicata.

We only had the opportunity for a quick view inside as we found that we were gatecrashing a double funeral. No indication outside and a bit late when you are in. Would like to return for a longer vist.
