Some of the art displayed is interesting not in terms of quality but in terms of history. But the way it is displayed is really poor. No descriptions in English, very poor hanging of the art pieces, and worst of all: the heat inside the...More

My travel companion and I were looking for something to do after enjoying a meal and paseggiata on a Sunday evening in Matera. We were shocked to find that the museum was still open. The cost is incredibly low and many of the objects are...More

Today we managed to visit several museums on one of the days it was free. Students are giving free guided tours on these days. The archeological museum in Matera has a wonderful collection of ceramic pieces. Worth a visit even if it's not free.

This museum is a must see even if it's just to look at the caves it's situated in. The sculptures are worth a look as well

We had some free time on our tour of Matera and spent it in the archaeological museum. Though small, it had a strong collection of Greek pottery. The admission charge was only 3.50 Euros and well worth the price.

This excellent establishment merits far more visitors than there were when we visited. It has many fascinating exhibits very clearly displayed, which enhance one's experience.

All signage is in Italian, so it doesn't take long for an English-speaker to get thru it. If you want to go in sequence, start with the exhibit rooms on the right after the ticket office.
