Surreal panoramic views back over Matera & The Sassi. Also some of the original cave dwellings carved out in primitive form including a small church. Take your time.

We took the tour bus (15E each) well worth the price. Stops for 20 minutes (not quite long enough) excellent vantage point.

If you’ve got a car, drive to the viewpoint across the gorge from Matera for sunset. We got there in the nick of time and it was magical.

Don't leave Matera without stopping by this park to get a great view back to the Sassi de Matera. It's magnificent! We only stopped for a short while to take photos and enjoy the vista, but it might have been nice to take a longer...More

If you find your way into this park it gives you an excellent view of the ruins and cave houses of Matera.

It is a very interesting area to visit . We went through sassi to the park and bavk to the town. Remember to put enough time if you do not have a car to find taxis.

The views of Matera and the Sassi are stunning from this point in the 'Murgia' opposite Matera and looking down on the canyon. It is also the site of 'The Crucifixion' scene in Mel Gibson's' film 'The Passion.' There are churches built into the rock...More

The old town of Matera is very beautiful from the hill just opposite the town. A good place to take photos.

Easy to get to but go early in the morning or late afternoon. Otherwise, it is really hot. Great panoramic view of Matera and surrounding area.

Questions & Answers

daymoLiverpool, Thanks so much for this post! We are in Matera without a car, and want to do some walking in the Parco della Murgia Materana, but are frustrated because the path to the bridge is closed. There are dozens of "tourist information" places in town who would like to sell us a (quite expensive) tour there, many of which only spend 30 minutes in the park. We just want a ride over there, walk around, and a ride back! No "tourist information" place here has told us of this bus you mention. If we go to Matera Centrale train station, can we find this bus? Can you tell me any more about what the bus is called, and when the last ride back to Matera Sassi Barisano might be? If it had not been for your post, we would have missed one of the main things we have come to Matera for! Thanks again.

We eventually hired a guide for 100 euro to spend two hours, but his narrative was terrific, and he gave us access to three locked stone churches that have fantastic frescoes. He pointed out a bus to us as we were leaving... More

Yes, it's possible. No fare, but without guide you can't visit the "chiese rupestri" (stone church)
