This was one of the highlights of our tour. Sadly, as happens on an organised tour, we did not have enough time to walk through Sassi and really absorb the atmosphere. Fascinating, yes, but it must have been hell living there before the inhabitants were...More

Beautiful and very old city build out of the rocks. Very nice to stroll all day long. Also very nice (and cheap) restaurants. Really worth a detour.

We sat here a couple times for drinks and absorbed the sounds and sights. It’s a hub for tour groups starting out and passing through.

Wandering the area, you can visit a cave house that has been fitted out with furniture and shows how the family lived. Also there was a very good commentary highlighting aspects of the cave house and its use.

Beautifully restored village of cave dwellings are a marvel to see, but the story of the Sassi is sad and heartbreaking. How families lived together in one room with their animals with no sanitation (by choice) is beyond comprehension. A must visit in Apulia.

We did a VRBO and stayed in a 'cave' for four nights (two nights too long. You can see the entire place in two days so do not stay longer. We rented a car and visited other places.

My guide was recommended through my VBT tour. Anna was excellent! She is a native of Matera, knowledgeable, and passionate about her city. She also leads public of the Matera Cistern.
